The Professor Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Owsley County's girls basketball head coach Wallace Bates has resigned as a teacher and coach at the school to assume a position with Hazard Community College. A decision on his replacement has not been made as of today.
The Professor Posted January 10, 2008 Author Posted January 10, 2008 Who are candidates to replace him? This just happened today. I don't know.
YankeeFan22 Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Is he done with this season or will he finsh it out?

lil' doc Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Sorry to hear this. A message to the Lady Owls: Girls, keep your heads up, and play the game that everyone knows you can.
The Equalizer Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 I'm hearing Gary Cornett, current lady owl assistant and, Bobby Bowling former owls assistant. Whoever they choose, i'm sure with the talent they have will have a very successful season.
Master of the Hardwood Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Gary will do a good job, hate to hear this in the middle of the season though, especially just before the Big Powell county game tonight! Good luck to the Owls the rest of the way.
ekubum Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Good luck Lady Owls staying in the hunt. Don't allow this to determine where you finish the season.
valleygirl99 Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 I'm sure that Gary can keep the girls up. Tonight wasn't the best performance by the lady owls, but considering the cirumstances they played hard the entire game. Keep your heads up girls, it will all fall into place for you.
Sports Fan for LIFE Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Who are candidates to replace him? I hear that Assistant Coach Cornett and Assistant Coach Mason will continue to coach the Lady Owls. A familiar face to Owsley County Basketball, Charlie Turner, was on the bench with the Coaching Staff at Powell County tonight. I am sure the Owsley faithful remembers January 2005, when Coach Turner and then Lady Owls Coach Paul Green appeared on the bench in Stanton for their first game as the interim Boy's Coaches when the Owls lost their Coach, unexpectedly. How ironic????

That's enough to make the girls a little nervous, I haven't got to watch the Lady Owls this season but it will be kind of sad not seeing Wallace on the side lines. When he took the program over it was down and he has built it back to a top 5 team. he worked hard and loved the girls it seemed. Not only has Owsley lost a basketball coach but, have also lost a tremendous volleyball coach. Anyways, Coach if you read this good luck in your future endeavors, hopefully you'll be back on a sideline sometime soon.

When Wallace took over the program in 2006 the Lady Owls had just won the district title in 2005, and had been runner up to Whitesburg in the All A two straight years. The program wasn't down, just rebuilding after several players graduated. All small schools have to do that.

My main focus was Wallace has done a good job.
