Rule Question

Featured Replies

This is a situation that happened in a recent game. Would like to know if the refs missed this one.

Team A is called for a shooting foul. Team A’s coach argues the call and gets a Technical.

Team B shoots the fouls shots. Team A’s coach call’s a time out and is granted the time out prior to Team B shooting the Technical foul shots.

Team B’s Coach argues that Team A can not be granted the timeout until after the technical foul shots.

Team B’s Coach get’s his own Technical now.

Was Team B’s Coach correct.

My question would be, right or wrong, why would a coach become so upset over weather you shoot first and get the timeout second, or vise-versa that he would nullify the advantage by picking up at technical foul.

Either way it sounds senseless to me and I would have to question Coach B's reasoning and self-control for putting himself in that position.

Kind of like being dead right!

Team B's coach was wrong. Team A can call time out.

That is correct, anytime the ball is dead a coach can call a time out, As long as the REf. has not handed the ball to the player a coach can call time out. but as soon as the ball is placed in the players hand, The ball is considered live and no time outs can be granted. Any way that's the rules in Illinois high school basketball.

Does it really matter its not like Coach A was icing the shooter.

Who knows team A got the ball back so it is over and correct.

I would think that as a result of Team B (shooting team) HC getting a T prior to his team shooting the technical FTs then there are no FTs and we have an alternate possession.

Update: A "real" ref saw my post above and sent me a note saying that since the technicals were not given at the same time, all Ts would be shot. Ts are not shot on simultaneous Ts.
