Dayton 55 Bellevue 53- Mike Swauger Holiday Classic Final

Featured Replies

Just 8 days after being ran out of Ben Flora Gymnasium by 18 points, Dayton comes back to the same place and beats the very same Bellevue team by a bucket.

Overall a really great game. Back and forth all night with the biggest lead for either team being I would guess 8. It came down to the final minute when Dayton pushed ahead 53 to 49 with just over a minute on the clock. After a Bellevue bucket Dayton takes some time off the clock only to take an ill advised 3, only to be followed by an ill advised walk by the Bellevue PG. Bellevue, now forced to foul, puts Dayton's leading scorer on the night at the line for the one and one with a chance to make it a 3 or 4 point game. BUT, he missed the first and Bellevue calls a timeout to set up a play with about 25 seconds left. A well executed play landed the ball in the hands of Bellevue's Brad McIntosh who made an outstanding face-up baseline move with the "fake drive, step back" to create some separation and nail the 15 footer to tie it at 53 with exactly 9 seconds on the clock. Timeout Dayton. Following the timeout, Bellevue pressures but Dayton inbounds to the weak side, hits a cutter right up the middle of the court who advanced the ball to the left wing waits for a split second, and hits a cutter down the middle of the where Dayton Sophomore Shawn Eastin hits the leaning "J" from 2 steps inside the foul line. Bellevues last desparation half courter went wide left. Overall a great game with a great finish. Lots of ups and downs for both teams and a good game to watch...

That was a nice summary No Excuses. I am leaning more and more toward cancelling my subscription to the Enquirer. They had nothing on this game. Now I know a lot of the info they get is called in but still, this was a game worth covering. Send a photographer over and get a few shots. This tournament is a big rivalry tourney.

Looks like Dilts letting the clock play out at the end worked to his advantage. Sometimes teams will call a timeout when team ties it up like that with 9 seconds left but letting them advance it up the court for a shot at winning it was the right move in this case.

Dayton is young and will improve as the season rolls on. I think the Bellevue game is a great example of things to come from the young devils.

The Bellvue-Dayton rivalry is just as important to them as is the Highlands-Covcath or Brossart-Campbell County matchups.

It would be nice if the papers might be able to identify these rivalries and cover them in lieu of some other ho-hum Division I contests that might be taking place on the same night.

Unfortunately, it will only get worse with the demise of the Kentucky Post next Monday.

Congratulations to Coach Dilts and his team on their upset victory over their cross-town rivals. I didn't realize that you had accomplished that when I saw you all "celebrating" at Barleycorn's on Saturday night or I would have certainly stopped over to congratulate you personally.

I guess its up to us BGP posters to keep everyone informed on the rivalries and other important games. Like I said before, I come to BGP before I open any newspaper. I depend on accurate reporting from all of you members so keep up the great work.
