As of right now there is no game in two weeks!

This was a bare knuckles football game. My hats are off to the Falcons, they are a great team with extremely gifted athletes, and they played with the class and toughness I would expect out of the sons of the 101st Airborne.

 

Bardstown's Kelvin Scott returned the opening kickoff 81 yards for a TD. Bardstown missed the extra point.

 

FC responded with a 15 play 80 yard drive capped by a 1 yard C.J. Croft TD run and the PAT to take a 7-6 lead.

 

Late in the first the Tigers drove it down and got a 1 yard TD run of their own, but missed the 2 pt. try to make it 12-7 Bardstown.

 

FC then broke off a long run to set them up inside the 10 and got a 6 yard TD run to re-take the lead 14-12. The rest of the second quarter was defensive struggle and field position battle. The Tigers drives were marred by a couple of dropped passes and a fumble that I felt was questionable. 14-12 at the half, and everyone agreed that neither team could seem to get the upper hand.

 

3rd quarter was much of the same, defensive battle, until about 4:00 left in the 3rd when FC got a remarkable break. Faced with a 3rd and 7 at the Tiger 40, Croft one-hopped a pass to a receiver, but all 3 refs were out of position and called it a catch. The "catch" kept the drive alive, and 2 plays later, Croft hooked up with a receiver for a 23 yard TD that was pretty sweet. FC opened up a 21-12 lead.

 

Bardstown got it back, drove it, and on 4th and 2 from the FC 48 called a lead that didn't get it. Then FC went three and out, but incredibly called a fake punt and didn't get it, either, giving the ball back to Bardstown, who drove it down and got a Ted Mattingly 2 yard TD with about 10:00 to play, and ran in a 2 pt. play to make it 21-20 FC.

 

The next drive was the drive of the game. FC took 7:30 off the clock and got a short scoring run, a drive kept alive with a 4th and 7 conversion from the Tiger 25 yard line, on a nicel little pass from Croft that was pretty well-defended. Made it 28-20 with 2:30 left.

 

Now, after the opening kickoff, FC had merely pooch kicked all night forcing the Tiger up backs to call for a fair catch. However, FC decided to kick deep, and Scott found a seam and began to race down the FC sideline. He was well on his way, and I believe would have scored following a cut-back to the center of the field, when he ran into his own man and was knocked down at the FC 45 yard line. The Tigers converted a 4th down pass for 1 first down, and had it at the FC 30 yard-line when they threw an INT at about the FC 15 yard line with a minute left to seal the FC victory.

 

All in all, this was a knock-down drag-out leave-it-all-on-the-field ballgame with some ferocious hitting on both sides of the ball. In the end, FC just had too many horses for Bardstown, and their line just eventually wore our line down and they were just too hard to stop. I felt we gave it everything we had. FC had no turnovers, committed only 3 penalties, and were one of the most fundamentally sound group of tacklers defensively that I have come across. Defensively, FC's corners and outside linebackers are just flat outstanding.

 

Bardstown got a Herculean effort from senior Ted Mattingly #11 on both sides of the ball, and from their fullbacks in general. Defensively, Logan Edelen #37 continues to make me wish that he had started as a freshmen rather than deciding to play football this year.

 

This was an atypical Bardstown team this year, and I think David Clark is to be commended. I feel badly for the seniors, but they have nothing to hang their heads about. As for FC, I find it difficult to believe that they will not be in the finals. They are a fine, fine football team.

Huge win for the Falcons, their first Regional Title since 1995 and the first one for Coach Berner. Congratulations to Bardstown on a good season and a really hard fought game. Fort Campbell’s defense once again stepped it up when they needed to and held a very good Bardstown team to 164 total yards. For the offense the combination of Turner, and Durrante in the backfield worked very well. Durrante had a huge game running the ball as well as the interception that stopped Bardstown’s final drive. After a couple of incompletions early, Croft threw a TD and a couple of key passes to move the chains and FCs kicker bounced back from a couple of misses last week to hit 4 for 4 last night.

 

All-in-all a very hard fought football game by both teams. Bardstown’s use of the fullback was effective and something FCs defense hadn’t seen much, if at all, this year. Both teams were fast and physical and I’m sure there will be more meetings in the near future between these two.

 

There were some calls that seemed questionable, probably more so in the stands then on the field. I can’t say on the “bounce pass” I couldn’t tell from the cheap seats one way or the other. I know from the FC side that the onsides kick “fair catch” call was extremely questionable at the time, but I believe they made the correct call.

 

I think the biggest complaint of the game was the concession stand running out of coffee and hot chocolate before half time… Someone must not have checked the forecast.

The referee said that the ball must touch an opponent or the ground before you can catch it in the air.
