If Harlan has not gotten any better on defense than when I saw them a month ago:

:scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

This could be a very onesided affair. Good teams have scored at will on the Dragons. Clay is a GOOD team, therefore, will score at will. Please show Mercy, if you can, Tigers!!!!

We appreciate the love and support...always nice to know that people up towards I-75 have our backs. Aside from that, how's "Super Syd" been performing in Roskopf's absence?

People do pile on when you're down.

You had quite a game last Friday. That says a lot for your character when you play that hard even though things haven't gone well this season.

He's doing o.k. Hard to fill those shoes. ( I'm still kind of weary of the "Super" moniker!)

Also, if it makes you feel any better, we got our backs stomped off by the same group of Tigers. I'm really pulling for you. Honestly. But the realist in me is coming out.

Harlan will be back in the hunt soon, plus I look for a lot of talent to NOT make the trip all the way to the new school when HHS is so close. Could be some new faces with the team next year, IMO.

Does anybody got any insight on this game? What is Harlan record?

1 - 8 I think?

Keep your head up man. As HDE said, you played one heck of a game last week. Just have fun and remember that in football, and in life, play to win all the time. Don't settle for moral victories, you all are still better than that. I have faith in you.

Clay Co. 35-14.

Good old Bungluster! Always can count on him for a slee-knapper! Well the Dragons woes are the result of Class A syndrome in a small town with not many jobs available. Also there are a couple classes where there are just not many boys. Harlan Graduated big Senior Classes in 2005 and 2007 with some real players in a smaller class in 2006. This year's senior class is decieving in size and not deep in experience. 10 seniors. 3- 4 year men;Aaron Jones, Westley Howard, and Jon Heck. 3- 3 year players: Chase Jones;Josh Johnson, and Bradford Marsili. 3 - first year players, and Hunter Luttrell, who sat out last year as a transfer. Chase only really played at his position 2 years, Bradford the same. The kicker is having only 2-3 Juniors, one of which is a first year guy. Several good sophomores who had to contribute and some really young supporting linemen. Effort all year has been remarkable. Natural talent arguable. As is usual in years like this one, you have to win the ones you should. Harlan had opportunities to win over Cawood, but just didn't get it done. I will refrain from commenting on the Jenkins game, but suffice it to say, Harlan should be in the playoffs by all thats right and holy. What is remarkable is that in a losing season where the rats start jumping ship, Harlan has only lost 1 player. One. The guys have never given up, have displayed character, grace, and toughness. They have been a real witness in a difficult situation. Harlan will be back, though it still could be lean for a couple of years unless what some think will happen and some county kids decide to come to Dragon land to play. Middle school has some big classes of boys coming up. I'll shut up now, afore Lungduster scolds me. ( just a funnin' big guy)!

Nothing like Lungbuster and Pappy funnin'. That is what keeps me going on preps. The funny thing about this is you all are probably really good friends outside of Harlan vs. Cawood topics. As my mammy used to say when I was a little boy, "Can't we just all get along?":dancingpa:dancingpa

I see that you have read the rap from Pappy and Myself. Yeah, Pappy can tell you want you need to know about the green. I had better stay clear because we get mad when we talk. LOL - I would like to add that things are never as good or as bad as people sometimes think. As for the comment about kids jumping ship to join the green in 08( and they just might) Harlan has made a living off the county for many, many years. Why should 08 be any different? Food for thought: They are always two sides to every coin. What if kids changed in the green to join the new HCHS to upgrade to bigger and better things? HCHS is going to be over 50 million. An amazing school with a lot of opportunities. What if they got the right person to run the school? The right coaches to coach the teams? The sports complex matches the school ( when built)? Just what if everything falls into place? Do people not realize that a player from Bell High that is average could go to another school and be a standout? The reason this doesn't happen more often id because they have a chance to be a part of something special. I know if my child had an opportunity to be a good high school player it would be hard not to send them somewhere to have kids to compete with for a chance to do amazing things. I wouldn't want to be on here saying that we are a small school and we have good teams in spurts and my kid just so happens to play in one of these spurts but give us another 6 years and we will be competive. My son only has 4 years. Large and Small both have advantages that could be listed. You just never know!

I agree with you for the most part. However, I don't think too many parents really decide where they are going to send their kids based solely on athletics. While every parent would like to see their child succeed in all that they do, the reason that the Harlan has "made their living" off of the county is based mainly on academics. I know that there are some exceptions (Charles Thomas in the 90’s, etc). Most parents know when they send their kid to a small school there is a less likely chance that he/she will be on state championship team’s every year. However, not too often in Harlan County do parents have to worry about their D-1 child getting the publicity that comes with being on a good team. You could probably count the kids in Harlan County who have gone D1 (in all three major sports) since 1990 on your fingers and toes. With that being said, I don't think that Harlan Ind. will loose many students to the new school unless (and I emphasize UNLESS) the county can equal or pass Harlan's average ACT, SAT, and CATS scores. Would I like to see the county schools raise the bar academically? YES. If it means that Harlan looses athletes to HCHS for academic reasons, then that means that more children in Harlan County are getting a better opportunity to be successful in the future. Make no mistake; the Harlan County School system has made BIG strides on the academic side of the ball recently. In the lower grades some of them have even surpassed Harlan Ind. However, Harlan High is still in the top 10% of schools in KY every year and the county is far from that. I think that combining the schools will only help to raise the academic bar even more for the county. However, they are still a long way off from equaling Harlan Ind statistically (which is what I think will continue to encourage parents to bring their kids to Harlan from the county). I feel this way because that is the reason that my parents opted to send me and my siblings to Harlan. Did we all play sports while we were there? Of course we did. All of us played football for four years and we helped contribute to some of the successful seasons that Harlan had while we were there. I personally feel like Harlan gave me a step up on academics. Does that mean that I think Harlan, and therefore Harlan students, are better than those from the county? Heck NO. I know many of my friends that went to Cawood, Evarts and Cumberland who are much smarter than I am. I think that a good education can be found anywhere that a student seeks it out. However, at Harlan, many times a good education was forced down my throat whether I liked it or not. Either I did the work, and studied, or I failed. It was that simple. I know there are teachers like that everywhere. I also think that consolidating will boost this same “philosophy” in the county because having one administration to control (and therefore emphasize this philosophy) is much easier than having three from a leadership perspective. Therefore I don’t think Harlan will loose many students to the new high school until people can see that the new high school has made progress equal to that of Harlan’s.

Clay County by a bunch. Harlan is in one of those down cycles which all schools their size go through. But they have a very fine coach and I expect them to rebound and have a fine season next year. Clay has to many athletes for them to match up.

I was not being negative towards Harlan nor was I posting for HCHS. All I am saying is you never know.
