His comment about bringing the National Guard home from Iraq reveals him to be a party hack more interested in scoring political points than discussing the urgent situation at hand. I haven't seen such a transparent attempt to shift the focus of the debate away from where it ought to be and onto one's political opponents since Hillary's infamous "vast right wing conspiracy comment"

 

A quick investigation into the numbers reveals that there are about 18500 California National Guard troops of which 1500 are actually in Iraq. That means 11 of 12 (roughly 92%) are still on call in California. I would guess that very specific skills are required to fight these fires so I would guess that only a fraction of the 1500 in Iraq actually have skills that are in short supply. (How many of the 1500 do you think are fire fighters? A dozen? Two dozen?) If they just need raw manpower I suggest the state of California ask for volunteers from the more than 1 million people that have been affected. If only 2% of that 1 million answer the call they have 20000 people - as many (or more) than the entire California National Guard (And if the people who are actually affected don't answer the call, why should anyone else?)

 

As far as Bush coming to get a first hand look, I agree that it's mostly for PR reasons as all presidential visits by any president have been in situations like this. But look at Bush's options: he can wait a while before coming and get hammered by his political opponents for not caring (like Katrina) or he can go ahead and make the trip right away and get hammered by his political opponents being a distraction during a time of crisis. There just isn't any pleasing some people.

 

As far as Bush bringing help, the federal government does have the deep pockets but I think it's worth mentioning where one should look for help in the order from where one should look for it:
