As I watched the game last night and thought about the debate on how the Brown family has the Bengals setup, I wondered how different the makeup is from Steelers to Bengals on scouts, administration, etc, etc.

I think they should model their franchise after ANY team that's winning right now. It would be a step up.

Not on the salary cap issue but I wonder if it isn't in setting up the administration and organization of the club. I would assume that Dallas would be hard for the Bengals to emulate with the scouting, administration, etc, as they have a lot more funds. But the Steelers should not.

What would be the advantage Dallas has over the Bengals? I'm not well versed in the revenue sharing in the NFL. Are not all profits shared equally?

Are they the only club operating outside the NFL structure. I am asking because I had believed that all of the teams had pretty much the same amount of money to play with.

I am thinking that local contracts will not be the same for a NY club and a Pittsburgh/Cincy club.

 

But honestly, don't know.

I agree and believe they are.

 

Both teams believe the draft is where the team is built.

 

Neither does much in free agency.

 

Pittsburgh has hung on to coaches for stability reasons; Mike Brown will do the same with Marvin Lewis (as much as some critics don't want to hear that).

 

I don't know about scouting, other than Marvin Lewis likes the "hands on" approach to having his coaches do a lot of scouting since they are the ones who have to coach them.

 

*One note: Pittsburgh was fortunate to have a 6-10 season befrore Big Ben came out in the draft after the Tommy Maddox debacle; it could have been ugly.

All of the clubs participate in the Revenue Sharing program that basically pools money like ticket sales and the like. Therefore, the operating expenses (read: players' salaries) are covered by the NFL Revenue program.

 

However, any and all marketing / sales efforts locally creates revenue streams that get kept by the Owner. For example, signage around Paul Brown and ads sold during their Bengals Weekly with Marvin Lewis TV show. Obviously, larger markets can create WAY more local dollars in this fashion that pad the Owners' bottom-line. However, the beauty is they can't use those monies to increase payroll, therefore, the playing field stays fairly level.

I just don't think you can cry "small market" like MLB teams when discussing the inadequcies of an NFL team. I always have a distaste for this model ourselves after someone else. Hasn't worked for the other pro sports team in this city. How about they formulate a successful plan that other teams try to emulate??

In theory, yes. However, I would argue in this internet generation, and with the amount of coverage given to College Football on about 15 networks, there is no excuse for someone else having better intel on a kid. Not to mention, if one-on-one time is used effectively at the Combine you should have a fairly good sense of what a kid is all about outside of pads.
