I've heard numerous complaints regarding the condition of the host course, and how the course was set up. Anyone care to enlighten us?

I've heard numerous complaints regarding the condition of the host course, and how the course was set up. Anyone care to enlighten us?

The course was in the worst condition that I've ever seen it, but with the drought we've had they've had to cut back on the use of water, so that's understandable. Their fairways were pretty bad, though. They hadn't had water in 3 weeks, which is what we were told, they were as hard as a rock and had hugh areas that had nothing but bare ground.

 

The only thing that really bothered me with the set up was that they had 7 or 8 pin placements, about as harsh as you can get. They were in corners with slopes that wouldn't allow the ball to stop if you was above the hole. We watched about 5 groups come past the par 5 # 1 hole, and not a single one parred the hole. Most of them were 3, 4, or 5 putting the green. the pin was in the front left with a severe slope. Some of the putts would roll up to the whole from below, then start rolling backwards off the green. And all putts I saw that were missed above the hole, even 1 footers, were off the green also. A lot of kids were next to the green in 2 or 3 shots, and left with 8's and 9's. Very frustrating, and this wasn't the only pin placement like that....there were many more. What made it worse was the temperature was in the 90's (which everyone knew before the pins were set) and it slowed play for these kids on a course that was stressed due to weather anyway. Someone should have used better judgement with the pin placement imo. The course was difficult enough because of the hard/bare fairways, without adding an extra pressure for these young men. I mean, this is not the U.S. Open. The pin placements probably added an extra 30 to 40 minutes in extreme heat for these boys. In the future they need to set the pins close to the middle of the greens and get these kids around the course as quickly as possible, and make it fun for them. The best teams are going to win anyway. Don't set it up like it's the Masters!

I would believe it if it was there. I played there earlier this summer for the first time since I played region there in high school. They were getting pretty dry when I was there. I can imagine with fairways being that hard it would get some kids in the trees when they shouldnt be. Also, the greens are those old style greens that are all sloped back to front, so they are a pain to be above the hole anyway. It's a shame the course was in such rough shape.

Someone said Jordan Cash of Rockcastle drove #18 and then Andrew Heiser of South Laurel went back to his bag and got out his driver and knocked it on #18 also.:eek: That is unreal. Its like a 350 yard carry down hill.

It's really not that far. I think the yardage up there says it is about 350, but it plays far less than that. I drove the green both times I played the hole and one wasnt hit that well.

Agreed! Very overboard imo. When a par 5 doesn't have a single birdie out of 109 golfers....something is wrong, and in this case it wasn't as much the kids as it was an unreasonable pin placement.
