The new Harlan County High School, Black Bears will open in August 2008. The building is to be completed in June 2008. Clotfelter-Samokar the Architecture Firm over the project told the board menbers at a meeting last week that the contractor is about two months ahead of schedule with the project and that they should finish the project in April 2008. The building is really taking shape and looks great.

Yeah, the school is amazing and looking better everyday. This high school is something everyone can be PROUD of and looks like it is going to be as nice as any school in the state. I think for the most part Harlan County High has an advantage as far as the site of the new school. Seems like most new Eastern Ky schools are sitting on a side of a mountain with little room. This school is going to be spread out over a nice area. Anybody have any ideas as to when the coaches are going to be hired. Are we looking at the same type deal as Letcher when they hired all coaches after the conclusion of each sport? Any truth to maybe playing B-ball in the 14th instead of playing in the 13th? What about the partnership with the pool?

This link should show a virtual tour of the new Harlan County High School.

That's great to hear. Not many construction projects finish ahead of schedule. How are they doing "staying on budget" wise?

How big is there gym ?

3,500 seats

I believe they now say it will cost $50 Million to build it, correct?

It's about $43 million not counting football, baseball, softball and soccer fields.

Wow. Is it going to take longer than expected?

No.

Harlan's soccer team will have it's own field, wow, do any other soccer teams in the 13th have a soccer field or do they use football field? Good for Harlan to have one though.

I know nothing about soccer. It probably is on the football field, if that's the normal setup.

If you look at the drawings and stuff, HCHS will have their own field not on a football field.
