I never said the program was in worse shape.

Comparing NFL to college is crazy. In the NFL if you need a QB you go buy one. In College you try and recruit KIDS and make them players.

Yeah...I remember the bidding war for Tom Brady when the Pats snagged him...;)

And to be able to do that you have to be able to recruit and Ty was not doing to great in that apartment. Yeah dont care to much about history these days, but they do still know that Notre Dame is one of the top football programs to play at in the country. They see it all the time while growing up because Notre Dame is on every single week. Charlie has been able to use that in helping kids come to Notre Dame because they do know its a top program and kids love to get recruited by a team like Notre Dame. And your right Charlie Weis name and his success definitely helps as well. Ty with his recruiting just was not going to get Notre Dame to the level they want. And you dont have to have a huge name that everyone knows to rebuild a program if you can recruit and know how to talk to kids..Just look at Pete Carroll, that USC program was struggling before he came there, and yeah he was in the NFL for a little bit but his name was never that big to kids. Yet he was able to be able to sell kids into coming to USC, and he turned that program what it is by recruiting. Ty was not going to do that, and people saw that. So they brought in a guy who can recruit in Weis...

Plus, you have to believe that the NBC contract helps...it means a lot for some kids to know that their parents and family will get to watch them play and if they go to ND they'll be able to watch every game.

I'm pretty sure most of the kids Pete Carroll recruited knew who he was before he reloaded USC.

:thumb: Ty was a good coach, but it was pretty easy to see that Ty was not going to be the guy who would get Notre Dame to where they wanted to be at. And they saw an opportunity to go out and get a guy who they thought would get ND to where they wanted to be at, and they jumped on it. It was a smart business decision....

Some probably did, but I bet a fair share of kids around the country didn't. I mean I knew who he was, but he wasn't that big of a name, and definitely not someone when he went to USC that people would have thought of as a coach who they definitely would want to play for and know they would win there. But he was able to go there and sell kids on going to play to a school filled with tradition at USC and national exposure. Ty was not doing such a good job at doing that though...

Each of the last three coaches have done better with the recruits from the preceding.

I agree with you that Ty wasn't going to take ND to a National Title.

The point I was trying to make in this thread was It is hard to say Weis is better coach than Willingham because the programs Ty has taken over have all be at very low points.

That I though Both coaches have done the best you can expect in 3 years.

Now if Weis can improve this season and win 9-10 games with this team of YOUNG guys. then I will say he is the better coach.

But I do think that ND program was in better shape when Weis took it over than when Ty did.

NO coach in a America would win 9 to 10 games this year after losing all their starters on offense and defense from the year before, especially going against the schedule Notre Dame plays.. If Weis can get this team to win 6 games and make a bowl, it would have been a successful season...
