Missing a couple of meetings and/or workouts to play in a fairly high-level tournament isn't going to hurt a kid's chances to show his college coaches what he can do in the fall. College teams have what ... 30 days in the fall?

 

That is up to the college programs. The kids belong to their programs now. If they want them there, then that's end of story.

 

Should a freshman call up his new college coach and say "he coach, I know you want me there on this day, but I'm playing in a legion tournament, sorry. I'll be there when I'm done."

I'm extremely impressed, with the talent on these American Legion State Tournament teams. A lot of college players and many, not just going to local KY schools in their own area, but getting the attention of many schools.

 

I was fortunate to see several of these teams play, during the summer and the talent level, is very good.

 

Again, regarding Danville I understand the reason and applaud the decision. Many have to make arrangements for travel, moving and spending some time with the family, before going off to college. I'll also guess, that Danville may have several HS players, who will be upcoming Seniors or Football players, needing to get out.

It was alot of fun this year STRIKE.

Does anybody have any scores for the mid-regional that started yesterday?

Paducah is 1-1 in the tournament. Came from behind in the first round to beat Pontotoc (Miss.) 10-8 in the first round. Trailed 7-2 after six innings against an Ole Miss signee, rallied to win it in the ninth inning.

 

Paducah lost a 3-1 lead in the second round to Blue Springs (Mo.), which looks like the best team in the tournament. Blue Springs scored three runs in the eighth to win 4-3. Tim Dunn, Paducah's starter, looked great for five innings then took a line drive off the back of his glove which probably broke a finger. Dunn left the game and is probably done. Paducah has lost another starter, third baseman Lance Davis, to a broken left hand.

 

Bowling Green lost their first game to League City (Tex.), then beat Bossier (La.) on Friday.

 

Paducah and Bowling Green meet in an elimination game at 4:30 on Saturday.

An interesting sidelight to this discussion:

 

Gabriel Shaw, who signed at Louisville, will miss Saturday's game in the regional tournament because he has to attend a mandatory team meeting at U of L. Shaw told some of us that the meeting is for the team to get their weightlifting programs and schedules, etc., and some other preseason workout details.

 

In my personal opinion, I think he could be excused from the meeting, considering that he's playing with his local Legion team in the regional tournament. Oh well ...

UL has signed Shaw and they've invested a scholarship in him and will rely on his pitching ability, to help them for the next several years.

 

Post #31 is an excellent summer program, like many other Legion teams but in proper context, UL is where Shaw will be getting his education and playing college baseball.

 

Sounds like this RHP has his priorities in place and I agree with him. He's a solid pitcher, very athletic and good size. Good luck to him at UL.

I'm not dismissing anything and I'm capable of offering my own perspective, which I have. Players make choices, we to daily and Shaw liked UL, they liked him and a scholarship was signed.

 

There is structure in college programs, when to get up, team meetings, when to report, when is practice and it's constant. I respect the position College Coaches are in and what they are trying to accomplish. They bring in student-athletes to help their program succeed and offer them an opportunity, to get an education. Coaches run the program and not the players, parents or others.

 

If a coach has rules, than all must abide by them. I've always understood the concept of the team first. We disagree on this situation.

Who wouldn't rather be playing than conditioning and unless someone from the Louisville staff has discussed with you personally what will be going on, how can you be so confident it could be handled over the phone and diss it off as not being all that critical?

 

It isn't like he's going to be hanging out at the beach in Louisville either. Louisville was hardly chopped liver this past season. I can imagine that competition for playing time will be very intense. I think that I would be very worried about making my best impression to the staff, right from the get go.

 

If Paducah were to advance, then how much longer would he be out of Louisville? One, possibly two more weeks. That's a lot of time to sacrifice for an incoming freshman and that is a lot of time to expect the coaching staff to excuse.

 

It kind of appears that Shaw has decided that the "tough" approach may not be the wisest route to go afterall.
