Saint Xavier/Fern Creek Scrimmage

Good analysis Biotech... the 04 regular season game against Trinity was fun, exciting offensive football to watch which is not something you can always say about a ST.X offense. There's no reason X can't do that every game. The short pass is almost as safe as a run from a turnover perspective. This is something that should be a regular part of the offense week in and week out, getting better every week so by the time playoffs come the offense is clicking on all cylinders. Maybe Glaser thinks that night was something of a fluke because Trinity was not ready for that? Any thoughts on why that offensive scheme was pretty much abandoned after that night? Yes, we saw the same formations a few times after that, but X never did wholesale commit to it like that night.

I think OX called the kid out, maybe not by name, but everyone knows who he's talking about. RP said Ben is a gamer and he also said Duce was the least impressive RB. :sssh: I'm just saying X has gone back and forth at the QB position, and sometimes a change isn't bad. I like the "Deer in head lights" quote.

As with all teams this early in the year, we are no where near where we want to be. The preseason is a developmental process which leads to the real thing, so I don't believe that any logical individual expects there aren't areas which still need a lot of work. This is the sole reason that I list both positive and negative (which simply means things needing further work) elements observed. The comments made about "QB Passing" were not directed at any individual QB, but the position in general. It seemed that all who played QB had the same problem. There has never been any doubt in my mind who should be starting at QB (just read the preview).

Ox, not sure who scored on offense, but there seemed to be a lot of depth and talent at running back. Passing game needs some work. On defense, the D-line and backers played well, Matt Spalding had an INT TD return from his outside linebacker spot. In the secondary, Matt Wilson had an INT and fumble recovery I think. Daylen Hall made some big hits. We did give up a couple long pass plays but they were basically deep balls that were throw up for grabs and FC had an athletic receiver who out jumped our guys.

Thank you, Park1221, for filling in some details! :thumb:

Thanks to all for the updates! I am on vacation and had to rely on BGP for the info and as usual you all came through. Sounds like the tigers have some work to do on O but the D sounds like it may be able to carry the team until the O starts clicking. Can't wait to see a game in the new staduim.

Luck I would agree that the passing game is lacking but for what X does and does to everyone year in and year out very very well I would say Glaser is correct in what he does offensively. Having said that I would look back to the 04 regular season against Trinity when X used the short passing game to purfection. This made the running game that much better. If you look back to the great seventy teams again the short passing game(TE) was very powerful for that Offense. Anyway JMO on X but I think for X to reach the top again they must be effective with the short passing game.

Good analysis. For this offensive scheme to work, it is imperative to complete the short pass. This did not happen in the Fern Creek scrimmage, because of poorly thrown passes and because of dropped passes. IMHO this plagued X last year. They can succeed with these problems against FC, but not Lex Cath, Male and T. The staff will go with the QB that can get it done, I think. In 1999 the starting QB was switched in the second game and X took state. If the starter can not get it done (I think he can) they will switch or perish. That is football.

I know that X has great coaching it has been proven time and again. Sometimes you really have to listen to what your former players are saying as coaches and make the change. I think MG really looked at that game and said we fooled T with the scheme and won big. When in reality what happened is he got the ball to all of the play makers in the O and kicked our you know what. I will say that we did not do what we were supposed to do with our DE play which was changed for the title game but that would have ownly IMHO made a better game of it, with the same outcome. X was it's own worst by not continuing with that total offensive scheme. People have questioned Bob Redmen for years about that D he runs when playing against good passing teams and the titles he has lost out on because of it I think the same can be said of MG and I am not trying to knock him at all I just think he could have won a few more titles.

Be patient my feline friends. The offense is being put in a bit at a time. Injuries slow things down and limit what you can do and again, we don't want to show everything. Tony Danza was in the house spying on us!!

Seriously to the X fans, what is going to be one of our staple plays-the QB draw? Did you see that run alot in the FC scrimmage? I think they are practicing some different things but I know that they had not put in a 3 wideout pass play by the FC scrimmage that's where a lot of the short passing will come from along with the tight end. They showed the 5 wide but that's a 7 on 7 formation. Also, with Zoeller with a bleeding chin, I don't think they wanted to take a chance of losing your senior starter with "exciting" plays that expose the quarterback. Buehner and Brutscher came in and threw more. Ben will start the season and the playoff games unless there is an injury.

Good post and up to your usual quality, astute observations. It seems that some fans had a concern, not over play calling, not over Ben's cut chin, and not over a lack of excitement, but over a number of errant passes to open receivers and dropped passes by open receivers, This is to be expected, to some extent, in scrimmages. The coaching staff, IMHO, is excellent, and these miscues should either diminish or the staff will put in players who can perform. But, at this point, for the most part the right players are in the right positions.
