Yep, one was a knee and the other was from a broken nose.

I think by far the top four team are: Anderson , Shelby , Simon Kenton, and South Oldham. The order could go several ways but I would have to give a slight edge to South Oldham as they are returning all 5 starters from last years Region Runner-up performance. They are led by Lauren Jones(Sr.) who will also contend for region player of the year along with Gray and Tolliver- She has some impressive stats and has already scored just under 1500 points in her career. Had the voting for coach of the year been done after the regional tournament, their coach might have gotten the award. They had a great run and I think won 14 out of their last 15 games and better yet no one expected them to be there but them and they were!

 

Simon Kenton will be right in the mix if they can stay healthy and respond well to thier coach- he is fierce but I love his passion for the game. I would give the egde to Shelby over Anderson. Although Shelby lost a lot, Gray is a tremendous player that I think we will really see explode this year and they will be depending on her more than the past years. She is more than capable of putting up some great numbers. Coach Zimmerman always has them ready to play at the end of the year - they will be there!

 

One of the things that I think everyone gets tired of hearing about is the strength of schedule- but I do think that is why typically we see the same teams close to the top year after year. Tougher schedules even though you might have some loses to go along with that, prepare you for your run in March. It is intersting to look at all the teams schedules and see who is playing the tougher teams- within and outside the region. I think that all the schools should have to play each other at least every other year - how else do you get to know all the teams, coaches, and players? Just food for thought!

Crazy 8's - I agree with your list except I have to add Oldham in the mix. saw them at regionals last year and they lost no one and were very tough. Coincidentally, all of these schools are also the largest ones in the 8th region.

 

Strength of schedule is important but many of the smaller schools can in no way compete with some of the large schools and must play in their conference. I also agree with your player reviews above.! There are some talented players in the 8th region.

I agree that Oldham definitely presents a match up problem for every team in the region with their size in the post with their two big players- Melton and Huckvale- no doubt that they create some problems. I am just not confident in their overall skill level and think that they need to improve in their ballhandling and defense. If you can handle their bigs even with smaller players,they seem to struggle. They have some younger players coming in that will improve their guard play but I did hear that one of their big guard/forwards quit over the summer. Not sure if that is true or not.

I think i would definitely have Trimble a bit higher in the mix. They have a strong team returning and if they play to potential on any given night they will be a force to be reckoned with. Coach Stewart will have them ready no doubt.

They were 10-16 last and lost 3 of their best players to graduation. I saw them this summer and it may be a re-building year this season. They still have Miller inside though.

I thnk it will be between Carroll and Walton - Verona. I can only rate WV on last year since I did not get to see them this summer. However, Carroll is very young and that side of the tournament bracket has all of the contenders.

 

WV has some talented players but they seemed to struggle to play as a team last year. New Coach maybe..I am not sure what the issue was. Carroll is young and quick.! Good Coach also so we will see what they do.

I feel the All A is going to be wide open this year. Any one of 5 teams can make it to Richmond. Here is my take on the teams strengths and weaknesses (in aphabetical order):

 

1. Carroll Co. - (Strength) Outstanding on the defensive end of the court. Girdy is ultra quick, bit is foul prone. Their full court press is very good. (Weakness) No consistant scoring. Also lack in size which could haunt them against larger teams.

 

2. Gallatin Co. - (Strength) Very good defensively. Play extremely hard. Balsiger coming back from injury will be key. (Weakness) No consistant scoring, esp. from perimeter. Experience level low due to losing 3 seniors.

 

3. Trimble Co. - (Strength) Miller. Biggest and best post player in the All A. (Weakness) No guard play to get Miller the ball. susceptable to turning the ball over when pressed.

 

4. Walton - (Strength) Varsity experience and Hargett. She is very good at getting to the hoop. If healthy, Heeger can hit the open "3". (Weakness) No other scoring other than Hargett and Heeger. The team also did not play up to their potential last year.

 

5. Williamstown - (Strength) Varsity experience. Starting 5 has been intact going on their 3rd year. Good team quickness and play hard all of the time. (Weakness) - Consistant scoring could be an issue. If Stith, West and Wilhoit can average double figures, they could be the surprise of the All A. Team lacks size, but rebounds well (esp. Wilhoit).

 

There is my take. As far as predictions, I will take Williamstown over gallatin Co. and Eminence. On the other side of the bracket, I will take Walton over Carroll and Trimble. As far as the finals, Williamstown pulls off the upset.

I agree with most of this...Saw Carroll, Gallatin and Trimble play this summer and Carroll definitely was the best of the 3. Trimble could not seem to handle the ball. Gallatin has a lot of young girls that will be good in the future.

I think anyone could win because well on any given night, anything could happen! But watching Carroll and Walton this summer, they have the edge. Walton is coming together (after getting use to their new coaching) and Carroll just has some talent that will make them a solid team, with outstanding "d". Walton hopefully will play more aggressive, and will have a ballhandler that will cut down their turn-overs. but I still think these two teams have the best chance to go to Richmond.

It is just too bad they are on the same side of the bracket!
