Who is responsible/acountable for keeping track of the number of pitches a pitcher throws during a game? I know the safety of the pitcher by the coach must always be first and foremost. But, in last night's 55th district game, Riverside's pitcher threw over 200 pitches in 4 1/2 innings!! Overhearing some of their parents, this has happened several times before. Should the umpires intervene during a game? Parents? School officials? Poor kid's arm has to be shot.

I don't believe there is any KHSAA rule regarding number of pitches. It only is concerned with innings pitched. So, technically, no one is responsible for keeping the count.

The parent(s) should be concerned and should discuss it with the coach and express their disapproval. The coach sounds like he is not looking out for the boy's best interest.

You are correct there is no KHSAA rule on the number of pitches a kid can throw.

Wow, that is awful! That's like two games...

You should always have one of your pitchers that is not playing that night keeping a pitch count. Even though different pitchers have different thresholds there should always be a standard set for that individual player on any given night.

Where is Riverside located?

What the heck was he still in the game for, he must have walked 50 batters.

No doubt. Honestly, it almost sounds like the pitch count number is wrong. I couldn't possibly imagine a pitcher throwing 200 pitches in 4+ innings. Heck, 200 pitches in a complete 7-inning game would be extremely high.

This sounds like the old days when pitchers would go out and throw complete games in both parts of a doubleheader.

Anyone have a final score to the game this occurred in?

That's what I mean, 200 pitches divided by four equals 50 walks, throw in some hits and it gets even worse, minus 12 outs....I think I would like to see the score of the game before I bite on that one.
