August 3, 201214 yr See, I can respectfully disagree with this, but understand the sentiment. His refusal to join the military left a bad taste in many people's minds. I think my dad, who fought in Vietnam, is rather ambivalent toward Ali as a result. But to me, he is The Champ. And the type of performer boxing desperately needs to prevent its steady devolution into irrelevance. You could say I'm ambivalent toward Ali. I'm ambivalent toward most celebrities. Not a big boxing fan, either. I don't think I've watched more than one Olympic event since 1996. I haven't even watched highlights this year. Ambivalent is hardly a term I'd use to describe my father's attitude toward Ali, though. Dad hates him. Will change the channel if he sees him on TV, with a few passing comments along the way. I know it's not a race issue. He feels the same way about Stan Musial.
August 3, 201214 yr I've never been a fan of him but there's no doubt he was one of the, if not the greatest boxers of all time and his celebrity exceeded anything we had seen worldwide. He's an icon.
