Sorry, yes Baker was the coach before Hall, Hoskins was his assistant. But was in line for the job and did all the fundraising over the summer and got the kids ready to go, before being showed the door. Not a good way to treat people.

I think any decent coach would have done about the same this year. I think the margin of defeat is something that stands out this year. Something went very wrong. I'm no coach by any means but the substitution rotation by Breathitt baffled me a bit. To start the 2nd half the teams were trading buckets but it was Channing Fugate doing Breathitt's scoring. After 2 min. he was on the bench and to me that's when things went from bad to worse with the margin.

 

I agree...Baker has to been given some credit for the upgrade in performance. But, and this is just my personal opinion, I think it had more to do with the influx of talent that Breathitt enjoyed at that time with Haddix, Johnson, Raleigh, Gaddis, etc...followed by Sewell, Hundley, the Millers...so Baker and Hall's tenures overlap a little, in my mind. Again, just my opinion, but during that time Breathitt County had, at the least, equal talent with anyone in the region, and, IMO, better most of the time. Yet, a region runner-up was the best we could muster...I just think if we'd had a good coach during that time, we'd have at least one trip to Rupp. (I'll give a pass on the Powell County fiasco, and won't go into that)

 

Breathitt continues to enjoy a nice flow of talent with Hollon and Smith and others, and the new freshmen class...but as always, the coaching leaves something to be desired, so it wouldn't surprise me if we go through a similar stretch of very good seasons and regional disappointments.

I guess I'll stand by what I said earlier about the refs. As for Hays being better and improved? Some kids are late bloomers, he's probably one of them and that's not a coaching thing, neither is the tournaround on the W/L stats, at least in this case. Other's have pointed out the differences in the two teams so I won't go into it. I don't think the coaches are bad coaches, so you don't need to defend them with me. I'm just saying we had good coaches and a down/rebuilding year gave the new administration a reason to put a local crony inas coach. Very similar to when they got rid of Baker, except for the down year thing. In his case it was a new administration and a couple of vindictive parents.

You can be proud and realistic at the same time.

 

I agree with some of that statement...I was never impressed a whole lot with either Baker or Hall. I do, however, think they're better than our current coach. It's just typical Breathitt basketball...the coach hiring has everything to do with politics, and nothing to do with basketball...and that's why we never live up to our potential. The next "good" coach Breathitt County hires for the basketball program, will be the first in my lifetime. I'd love to see it happen.

I guess getting out of the Jim Rose era was just a big relief for me! Man, now that was some tough years. Rosco Denny took Breathitt to Rupp and they got rid of him the next year? Just hard to figure.

You're right about the Jim Rose era...that was definitely the low point.

 

As far as figuring it out, there isn't much to figure. It's basically a joke. For the most part, Breathitt basketball coach is a political favor, not a real coaching job. Maybe one these days we'll get lucky and the political appointee will actually be a really good coach to boot....:lol:

 

Thankfully, we're in the 14th region, where good coaching is a rare sight, so it's not as big of a disadvantage as it could or should be...

Everyone can't have the opportunity to have one of the best coaches in the state, someone like Coach Al Holland at Perry Central, and it's funny, because they are talking about getting rid of him. Maybe he would be welcomed at Breathitt! Or like some other years, he could come there and win the region and get fired there too. Crazy things these administrators do. I think it has a lot to do with some people or 1 person, not wanting the basketball program to do well, so the football program still looks like that is all Breathitt county has. Until some things or people change in the county, basketball will always be second best, behind football.

If you have attended the last two games you would see that the 12th region officials are not calling like they have all year in the 12th. (you would've had to watch a few games played in the 12th). I've heard from good sources also that there are certain people in Pippa Passas whom have pull with the referees that are selected for the 14th tourney. I'm not going to come out and say that JBS is being helped out, but there definately something going on.

JBS played extemely well and were allowed to play extremely physical. Stepp picked up his first foul of the regional tourney with 1 minute to go in the first half of the Breathitt game????? My point about officiating is that we play a style all year in the 14th with 14th officials and then force each other to play alternative styles come regional tourney time. This is the poorest group of officials from the 12th I have seen in quite a while. No consistency and ears as big as elephants,(not literally). At least in you get the shaft by 14th officials you can retaliate in ratings the next year. This way you just get the box of rocks. JBS really looked good but a game officiated the way we have played all year and they aren't even playing last night.

I don't think that Breathitts coach or his staff are clowns. I think that it is a ashame that someone would write such a statement. Why couldn't Coach Hall guide them to a good record he had the same playes as he did last year!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess last year's experience and growth did not help any this year. Last year was a rebuilding year for Breathitt. There is not any coach that can come in with nothing, as several people are indicating, and have a 24-5 or whatever winning season. The groundwork was laid long before Banks arrived on the scene. And, look at the schedule --no Powell County games--JBHS maybe once--and other teams that have been on the BHS schedule in previous years. If the competition is weak, a lot of folks could have a nice win-loss record. Just face the reality! Hopefully next year will be better--unless rumors are true!!
