Metal Bat Ban In NY

Featured Replies

I can see a danger level at the college level. And 70mph 45 feet away for a 12 year old could be trouble. Other then that, pitchers may have a tougher time fielding the position but should be able to protect themselves.

Is that bat speed you listed or velosity of the ball leaving the bat?

Average velocity of a batted ball.
Average velocity of a batted ball.

Would you know the calculation for velocity if the only known factor is bat speed?

I am sure it would involve bat speed, weight or strength of the batter, transfer of the velocity of the pitch.

The exit speed of a batted ball, is termed BBS

The BBS (along with the launch angle, ball spin, and aerodynamic drag forces) is what determines how far a hit ball will travel. Starting with basic physics conservation laws (conservation of linear and angular momentum, conservation of energy, and the definition of coefficient-of-restitution) it is possible to derive an equation for the batted-ball speed as:[1,2]

(1)where vball is the pitched-speed of the ball, vbat is the linear speed of the bat at the location of impact, eA is the collision

Taken into consideration the ball is struck right on the sweet spot (line drive) and not grounded or popped up, does the vball not lose any speed in reversing direction? If not, would you calculate 80mph vball + vbat at 70mph to get 150mph BBS ?

Here's the physics behind it. http://www.kettering.edu/~drussell/bats-new/batw8.html

Below is a graph from a study comparing metal bats and wooden bats with equal sweetspot sizes. The orange dots are wooden bats and the blue dots are metal bats.

A batted ball, will lose exit velocity, if hit near the bottom and creating backspin....It will gain altitude, but lose exit speed and distance.

A ball struck on top, will generate top spin and will have a slight reduction in exit speed initially but will sustain longer, than backspin.

I'm not a scientist but I do know that an aluminum bat has a larger sweet spot which means the hitter has a higher chance of hitting a rope at the pitcher. I've never pushed my son to pitch for this one reason.

I say a quick prayer every time my son steps on the mound.

This is a great discussion and I have learned some things from this. Great posts guys.:thumb:

Here's the latest. Looks like Bud is wanting to give some advice, but will not answer his phone. :D

Metal Bat Ban

Best qoute in the article, "But when the protection of student-athletes is left to people who are in bed with the metal bat companies," Oddo resumed, "someone has to do something."

I am definitely for banning metal bats. There are many benifits to taking this action. One problem that has not been mentioned in the thread but has in others is the decline in numbers for area baseball programs. I have coached AAU for the past several years and it has become very obvious that the kids that are on the top of the pack are usually the kids that can afford to travel, buy expensive bats, take lessons etc. We lose many of the best atheletes because they can not afford to play. A ban on metal bats would certainly help in this area. Remember back in the day when every team had a bat bag. Now every player has their own bat.

Surely someone on this site knows a congressman that could get this bill introduced in Frankfort.
