Uncle Jed's reference, I believe, is to the fact that the at large member of the KHSAA Board of Control, an Ashlander, was one of the very few B of C members not present at the state tournament in Bowling Green last year.

 

Let's just say that that particular member is now a former member, that she was never remotely helpful (even when asked), and that her presence at the tournament, in general, and at the award presentations, in particular, would have been most hypocritical. I, for one, am pleased that she wasn't present. A lot more could be said but I'll leave it at that. Good riddance.

This is getting silly. But, what the heck. It is Friday afternoon, the secretary is off on an errand, everyone else is gone, and there are no more appointments for a couple of hours. So, why not respond?

 

Intentional Foul, I mentioned the other schools only to offer information that Boyd County graciously handled the request without feeling the need for a "group conference". No slight at Ashland and no slight at Fairview. In fact, I am rather confused as to why one was even implied. My post certainly didn't indicate any.

 

Stripedshirt, we are talking about presenting a 17 year old girl with a plaque for becoming the leading scorer and rebounder in the region. The accomplishment covers the entire history of the region. It covers all those fine Hop Brown teams. It covers all those past "greats" who have ever, ever played in this region. It even includes all those great Ashland state champions of early in the last century.

 

However, it is not a decision to invade Canada or to hang Tubby Smith. It is what it is. Period. Therefore, all of the complications and imagined bureaucratic red tape you present in your post #20 are, at best, ridiculous. It is just a plaque to a young girl. No lives will be lost. No one will die of hunger. It won't, in and of itself, cause the "Second Coming".

 

So, why not do the right thing for a change and honor the young lady. It really won't cause anyone else any pain.

 

Why so much opposition?

 

I dont think you will find any "opposition" in my post Scooterbob. I am in full agreement that the achievements of Ms Queen are worthy of being honored. I am simply trying to shed some light on the fact that there is a right way and a wrong way to handle such a situation. During a District tournament or regular season game it is easy to show up on game night and work out the details. During a Regional or State Tournament you must cut thru the the "bureaucratic red tape" as you so aptly referred to. Do I agree? No.... Does my or your opinion really matter? No....Trust me, the red tape is not imagined. Perhaps if you follow the remainder of the tournaments this week you will see another presentation being made. When/If you do, why not ask the participants in said presentation what steps were taken to make it happen?

 

Just wanted to share another perspective to some who may have their focus narrowed by the paranoia.

I see no paranoia but I do see a lot of silliness about non-existent and unnecessary "protocol". By the way, we will all be happy to see Crager honored.

You've said all that needs to be said on the matter, Scooterbob...and I agree with all of it. I would like to add one comment.

 

As I understand it, tournament officials denied Coach Euton's request on the grounds that no individual accomplishments are recognized at the tournament. I find the logic a bit strange in light of the fact that not only will All Tournament Team members be recognized on Saturday night...but winners of drawings for room & board scholarships are recognized nightly. Clearly, someone simply refused to do what would have taken...at best 60 seconds...and would have added a nice touch to the night's proceedings.

Could this become a Title IX issue?

It just blows my mind that the tourney powers that be would deny this request! What better time to recognize a super young lady that has accomplished not one but two REGIONAL than at a REGIONAL TOURNAMENT? This isn't just a school record, it is a REGIONAL record. My goodness......

 

Himmelfarb, I agree that the logic is very strange. IMO, as I stated before, she should be recognized after the championship game, when more people and players are in attendance.

 

I can't imagine why this would be a problem at all.

 

I can say tho that GORADIO had super nice words for Emily while interviewing Megan Gearheart during the West Carter/Ashland game the other night.

I'm not sure who is running the show at the Regional, or who is calling the shots. However, the person(s) who decided to refuse to honor Emily Queen, and rejected the request to take 60 seconds to present her a plaque needs to be identified.

 

I hope many Letters To The Editor are submitted and published to bring to the public's attention the stupidity and mean spirited nature of this decision.

I read in todays Ashland Daily Inaminute that they honored the 16th Regions Officials Assigning Secretary during half-time of the Ashland/East Carter game on Saturday. I am not saying that Mr. Crager didn't deserve the honor because he has done an excellent job, but if the Region can honor Mr. Crager for his accomplishments why couldn't they have done the same for Miss Queen?

At the end of the Ninth Region Championship game and when they were announcing the All Tourney team, they gave game balls to Jackie Hicks of Boone County and Nicole Dickman of Notre Dame Academy, because each scored their 1000th point for their school during the Tourney.. Nice gesture by the Ninth Region Officals.... So if the Ninth can do something nice for their players it surely isn't against the rules.....

Dont worry about the people that makes these decisions, everyone who knows anything about basketball knows she is great. Wow, couldnt squeeze a minute of air time into the regionals, had to go to the board of regional braintrusts and get it approved weeks before hand I guess. Reminds me of Pastors that must have a Church Board meeting to get a vote just to change the light bulb in the mens restroom, then they vote to talk about it and bring it up at the next meeting which in turn gets canceled or rescheduled due to fact that it wasnt discussed under new business 3 meetings earlier!
