Atherton and Central violate scrimmage & heat policies

Featured Replies

They held a scrimmage in full gear in July violating heat acclimating policy.

I would make an example of both schools and ban them from postseason play this year. I would also suspend both head coaches for the entire season.

Yeah, pretty bad to not follow the rules that are very well known.

Right, this should be a slam dunk for the KHSAA. The hammer should come down.

Also, this is a case where the KHSAA should allow any football player from either Central or Atherton to enroll at another school immediately with no strings attached.

From the article JCPS self-reported to the KHSAA:

Both programs received five penalties, according to JCPS, including scrimmage cancellation, practice reduction, a financial penalty, acclimatization training and a season probation.

As part of the penalties, the programs will have to cancel its first authorized pre-season scrimmage across all levels of the program with no rescheduling permitted. The KHSAA allows two pre-season scrimmages.

Both Central and Atherton must cancel two full-gear practice sessions scheduled between August 1 and August 7, "with makeup sessions prohibited on weekend dates," according to the district.

Each football program was fined $250 by the KHSAA and placed on probation for the 2026 season.

"Any additional violations during this period may result in coaching staff suspensions or game cancellations," the district stated.

Finally, coaches had to take a mandatory administrative training covering athlete acclimation and acclimatization protocols.

"The coaching staffs at both schools have fulfilled the mandatory training requirement," per the district.

"Both programs remain fully committed to meeting all regulations and prioritizing student-athlete safety," Morris' statement said.

Talk about getting off easy, geez, we are so soft these days...

Seems like Central High was such a well-oiled, high class machine under Ty Scroggins. That started to slip in recent years. Doesn't look any better with the new coach already violating very obvious KHSAA rules.

My reading comprehension needs work. Is this the punishment that the KHSAA dished out, or is this the punishment from JCPS? I agree with you, Guru, this is such a "slap on the hand" punishment and shows that the KHSAA has about as much power as the NCAA these days.

It sounds conflated but I assume it is the KHSAA because according to the article the KHSAA fined both schools $250. And what an absolute joke, KHSAA.
