Somerset 47 Danville 43

Somerset 47 Danville 43 at the Briar Patch.

Good win for Somerset, who is still trying to get their football players into basketball mode.  I know the Jumpers only played 6 players against Mercer County on Monday.  I had been told that Danville looked to be much improved in Ford's second season at the helm for the Admirals.  Did anyone watch it?

Highly competitive rivalry game between two long time class A rivals.  Danville is improved team no doubt.  Somerset dug a big hole early, but went on an 17/0 Run in 3rd quarter to go up twelve (sparked by 9 pts by FR Guard Brock Stevens who got his first career start tonight I believe? Danville mounted another run, but Somerset held on.  Josh Bruner played (and solid.  Chucked a deep press break long ball after a TO that showed the quarterback in him) but Bartley was out sick tonight.

I watched it.  It wasn’t very pretty….  Somerset only scored 4 points in the first quarter and Danville only scored 6 in the second quarter.  19-17 at halftime.  There were a lot of missed layups and turnovers.

Both teams tightened things up in the second half and executed better but in my opinion they have a way to go to challenge the top teams in the region.  That doesn’t mean they couldn’t surprise someone on a given night though.

Bruner played a decent amount of minutes and seemed to help Somerset.

Was Grundy able to play?  I know he had to sit out Monday with a turned ankle.  They also won't get Josh Lewis back until pretty late in the season.

#10?   Yes, he played some but I don’t remember him getting a lot done.  I had one eye on the SEC football game and one on this game so I might have missed something.  Absher made some plays and Lonesky had a few good ones even though Danville’s big guy rejected his first two shots.  If he can get his shoulder into the defense he’s pretty good but it’s pretty much right hand only.  #22, the freshman made a couple of nice threes in the first half.

Yes, Grundy played but not his best (seemed gimpy).  Jan for Lewis I believe.  Stevens made some big plays.

The region overall is pretty weak.  Need a good draw in state tournament.

I will say this.  Look at who’s played better early.  The teams that don’t have to depend on many (if any football guys).  Basketball is a chemistry and skill game.  Those grow in time.

I said something similar in the West/Pulaski thread. West looked like a team in mid season form because they weren’t replacing a lot lost from last season and have had all their guys getting great coaching from Adams all summer and fall.

Coach Adams does a great job.  I was just making the point I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss these teams working kinks out.  Great point!  Not saying these teams aren’t the best but (West, Lincoln, Mercer and DCA didn’t have any football guys that I’m aware of).  They should be ahead.

Basketball season is for sure a marathon and not a sprint. Have to build as you go and hope injuries don’t derail you. First of the season is always about finding yourself. Why I said I think Pulaski is searching for replacements for Blankenship and Woolridge right now. All teams are trying to find that chemistry and replace what they lost with young kids and in some cases add in transfers. Waiting on football kids does for sure make this take longer. A lot of great coaches in the 12th that will figure it all out and the region tournament will be as electric as ever.
