Covington Catholic 14 Johnson Central 13

Featured Replies

Tale of two halves. Johnson Central had 35 offensive plays in the first half to Covington Catholic's 12 offensive plays and the Golden Eagles led 13-0 about four minutes into the 2nd quarter.

The Colonels score just before halftime, make their adjustments, and score 14 unanswered points in the second half, stopping every one of Johnson Central's drives in the 3rd and 4th quarters after failing to stop any Johnson Central drives in the first two quarters.

The difference of the game was a blocked PAT by Cov Cath's Logan Sanning.

What a gritty win. Proud of this team!

Much respect to JC.

Good game by both sides I wish the refs weren’t as involved considering that is some kids last time putting on the pads. JC defense stepped up when needed and really carried JC the run game could not get going they just could not get any yards.

Credit to JC. They took it to CovCath in the first half.

CovCath did not look ready to play. Good job to the coaching staff on making adjustments and to the players for persevering.

Nice win. Survive and advance.

To come back from down 13-0 and JC has the ball when you know you’re only going to get maybe 6 to 8 possessions is culture and toughness win.

End of the 3rd quarter and Cov Cath runs down the field to get ready for the 4th and JC walks down half way before a light jog. It’s a little thing, but it says a lot and EE always has his teams like this.

Nick Krallman played a monster of a game on the DL for Cov Cath. He’s been really good this season.

Cov Cath only had 26 offensive snaps in this game. Not a whole room for error when the other team is eating up the clock.

Hey, I got one right! ☺️

Johnson Central will be fired up for this one after last year’s showing. Based on JC giving Corbin and Ashland all they wanted, this has the makings of a very good game. If both team’s establish the run, there won’t be many possessions. I’m expecting a close, low scoring game.

26 offensive snaps is wild.

I am a bit late to this one but congratulations on Covington Catholic on a hard fought victory against a great Johnson Central team. That wishbone offense is load to handle. The Colonels allowed 277 rushing yards which is a lot but considering Johnson Central averaged over 400 yards on the ground per game this season, that is pretty solid. To pull this win off despite having little time of possession on the field against the 8th ranked team in the 4A RPI is an impressive accomplishment.

Major cap tip to Covington Catholic for their resilience and composure being down 13-0 and coming back.

I was shocked to see that Covington Catholic only picked up 127 total yards offense, but it's hard to generate offense when your offense is only on the field for 26 snaps as CCHFC mentioned. I projected a game where each team would be effective running the football, one that was more high scoring. Although this Johnson Central bunch has been more explosive than last year's team, they still do a great job with the three yards and a cloud of dust offense and keeping control of the clock and utilized that to hold Covington Catholic to 14 points and nearly pull off win the win.

Congratulations to Coach Jesse Peck and the Johnson Central Golden Eagles on a great season. Unfortunately there is no asterisk for losing in the second round in a 4A class that is as ridiculously loaded as it gets, but this team fought and these seniors were resilient at many points throughout the year when their defense was questioned. This senior group has endured so much from losing Coach Matney as freshmen to a challenging season in 2023 with an overwhelming amount of injuries. Yet that year they still found a way to win their district and make the regional final. They came back this season to put up one of the all-time great rushing offenses averaging over 400 yards per game and finished second in a district with 4 teams ranked in the top 15 in the RPI.
