The Camels opened up their season strong, with a 63-17 win over 4A Scott in Week 1, but in the 9 weeks that have passed since August 23, Campbell County's offense has come up short while their defense has struggled hard to contain opponents' passing attacks on their way to their current 2-7 record. Their only other win of the season came in Week 5 when the 6A Camels eked out a 29-28 win against 1A Newport Central Catholic after New Cath failed to convert for 2 in the final minutes of the game

Junior QB Lucas Anthrop has had a solid year passing; he currently stands at 87 for 135 (64%) for 1094 yards and 11 touchdowns in 8 games played, for an average of 137 yards and 1.4 touchdowns passing per game. Anthrop is the team's second-leading rusher, with 382 yards in 8 games, putting his average just shy of 7 rushing yards per game behind leading rusher, junior Trevor Bertram, who has 488 yards rushing in 9 games played. After struggling with turnovers early in the season, Campbell County's offense has cleaned things up, only turning over twice since their season-high 5 turnovers in their game against Highlands in Week 3. But on defense, the Camels have had a hard time defending things by air all season long, with over 2000 yards (227 per game) allowed passing, compared to a much more manageable 164 yards rushing allowed per game. Fortunately for Campbell County, this years Covington Catholic squad is leaning hard towards their run game, with only 28% of their total offensive yards this season coming by air, while tallying the other 72% with 2,400 rushing yards this season.

Cov Cath definitely does know how to run the ball, though. Junior QB Cash Harney and junior RB Dylan Gaiser have combined for nearly 2000 of their total rushing yards this season, with 901 yards and 862 yards, respectively, and a combined 22 of the team's 53 offensive touchdowns this season. This season, Dylan Gaiser has had two 200+ rushing games, while Cash Harney's season high rushing game was 173, so both players are eyeing the opportunity to click over the 1000 yard mark for the regular season. Two players with 1000 yard rushing seasons in the same season would be a program first for Cov Cath. Senior Andrew Bessler had a very strong supporting performace this past Friday against Mason County, with a breakaway 30 yard touchdown run from halfback, and a team leading 5 solo tackles in the game on the defensive side of the ball. Junior defensive back Logan Sanning also had a strong defensive performance on Friday, with 2 solo tackles and tallying is 2nd & 3rd interceptions of the season. The Colonel defense has been a turnover machine this season, leading the entire state in interceptions (19), and leading 4A football in total in turnovers (30).

What are your predictions for Friday night in Claryville?

Running a little behind. I got stuck in traffic on my way home from my last errand for the day. Headed to the game now.

Big night! A Douglass win, an Ashland win, and a CovCath win could have some pretty big 4A bracket implications.
