Grant County is sitting on a 4-1 record right now, with wins over Waggoner, Fort Knox, Covington Holy Cross and Harrison County, and a loss two weeks ago to Rockcastle County. The Rockets handed the Braves a 45-14 loss at home on September 13th, but then Grant County bounced back to beat Harrison County 28-16 last week in their first week of regular season district play.

The Braves are led for a second straight year by Mr. Everything, Cameron Duncan. Duncan is starting QB, leads the offense in rushing yards and scoring, he kicks the PATs, and on the defensive side of the ball he's among the top tacklers on the team and he leads the team in forced turnovers with 1 forced fumble and 1 interception. The Braves offense has passed sparingly this season, with 32 total attempted passes good for 11 receptions, 231 yards, and 4 of their 16 total offensive touchdowns. They have 864 yards on the ground on 140 attempts rushing the ball.

Cov Cath improved to a 4-2 record last week with a Thursday night win over Holmes in their first week of regular season district play. Their two losses this year came in weeks 1 & 2 with a loss to Ryle in the season opener followed by a loss to Highlands in their home opener. They followed those with a 42-3 shellacking of Simon Kenton, a 47-28 win over Dixie Heights, a 49-28 win over Beechwood, and then Thursday's 56-0 swamping of Holmes.

If Friday night goes similarly to last year's game against Grant County, you can expect to see a lot of play from the Colonel backups. Last year Cov Cath used this game to start working some of their #2s in with their starters and then began with wholesale backup substitutions in the second quarter of the game.

What other predictions do you have for the game on Friday night in Park Hills?

Excitement and anticipation abounds for this game.

Most of the threads for the Cov Cath district games were pretty quiet last year, if memory serves. I hate saying that things are a forgone conclusion before the game is even played, but for teams like Grant County, Harrison County and Holmes that are struggling more seasons than not to finish with a winning record, playing against teams like Covington Catholic is definitely not helping their plight.

But I'm still REALLY happy that the guys at Grant County who want to play football do get to play football....period. I can definitely say that as much as I loved playing football, if I'd been in high school playing for a football program that went 0-10 for four straight years, then so be it, I would have been playing four years of high school without a single win. So for that reason, I'm glad they get to play on Friday. And although I haven't talked to him in person about it, I've gotta think that Grant County's quarterback Cam Duncan probably thought it was pretty cool getting to run right past Willie Rodriguez for a 67 yard touchdown on a draw play in the first quarter of last year's game against Cov Cath. That's a memory he wouldn't have had otherwise. That's the way I try to look at games like this.
