Way less than half of D1 schools are even profitable in Football, even less in Basketball. 

Non-revenue sports are not the responsibility of revenue sports.

Take away non-revenue sports the vast majority of "revenue producing teams" aren't making a profit either. I think it's like 60-70% of football programs lose money and around to 90% of basketball teams don't make money. 

I'm not against paying players and giving them a W2 (which would have to include tuition, housing, meals, swag, tickets plus any money they are paid), I'm just not sure where that money is coming from outside of a handful of schools. Schools like WKU, NKU, Morehead, Ohio, Akron basically all mid majors have no ability to pay players. Several schools in power conferences don't turn a profit in football and basketball. 

The problem I see is the whole system feeding off the talent of the players on the top 16 or so teams in both football and basketball. Those players are being cheated to fund the College Industrial Complex.
