Beechwood 26 Newport Central Catholic 9

I will add, that was the ugliest Beechwood win I have seen in some time. A lot of uncharacteristic mistakes. The defense was slow out of the gate and let NCC make some plays to get that long opening drive. That said, at the end of the day you look back and Beechwood's defense is still the dominating factor for Beechwood week in and week out. NCC's offense did not score a TD. The field goal on their opening drive was all the scoring for their offense.

Matt Kappes is a nice add for Beechwood at kicker. Kickoffs were inside the 5 with hang time and looks like enough leg to kick field goals from 45 yards out. He could be huge in a close game in the last couple weeks of the playoffs.

On the New Cath side, I was impressed. The QB Smith throws a very nice ball. Runyon is very quick and makes plays. Smith running the RPO is a strong look for New Cath. I believe the Breds are a threat in 1A. They will be underdogs to Raceland and Pikeville but if they can get better in the passing game, they are very capable of upsetting either of those teams. Make better use of Smith and the passing game. He can get it done, and he is a junior so back again next year.

Dale Dawn with a bunch of great photos from the game.
