Beechwood vs. Russell County (KHSAA State Tournament Quarterfinal)

Featured Replies

Beechwood and Russell County share more than matching 29-6 records. Each gutted out a one run victory in the first round to earn a spot in the final eight. The Lakers have a strong #2 option on the rubber in Cody Luttrell. Whether it's Luttrell or someone else that gets the call, they'll have their hands full with the top hitting team in the state - Beechwood bats at a .380 clip as a team.

Game time is this afternoon 1:30pm.

Cody Luttrell (Russell Co.) 11-0 with a 0.55 ERA and 124 Ks in 63.2 innings pitched

vs.

Sam Cottengim (Beechwood) 5-0 with a 1.31 ERA in 32 innings pitched

I may have under sold Luttrell as RC's #2 pitcher. He might be their ace.

The Lakers make a little noise in the top of the 2nd with a couple of base hits and a sac fly.

1-0 Russell County

Luttrell sits Beechwood down in order again. Still 1-0 Lakers.

Beechwood is threatening with runners at the corners and two outs.

Luttrell gets out of trouble with his 5th K of the day, preserving Russell County's 1-0 lead. Heading to the 4th.

Luttrell has retired Beechwood in order in 3 of 4 innings so far.

A lead-off double goes nowhere for Russell County as Cottengim retires the next three batters to keep this a 1-0 game.

Russell County has runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out. Cottengim is getting the hook after a good day's work. Torin O'Shea is on in relief.

O'Shea does his job to keep the Tigers within a run. It's still 1-0 Russell County as we move to the bottom of the 6th.

The top of the order is due up for Beechwood.

The Tigers' heavy hitters were not able to get anything going. Russell County's catcher threw out Holladay at 2nd to end the inning.

I thought he was safe at 2nd but it was very close.
