With Warren East shifting to the 15th District next year, this may well have been the final district matchup ever between these two (or at least for the foreseeable future).  A three-way tie for the top seed and Bowling Green winning the coin toss is likely the only path to another possible meeting.  And I will be very interested to see if Warren East continues the series moving forward.  This was the 56th consecutive win by Bowling Green over Warren East, which is just gets more mind-numbing each time it gets extended.  The Purples have won more in a row over the Raiders than the Raiders have ever beaten Bowling Green period.  And what is crazier, is that East led the series 41-35 when the streak began.

Purples have one more district game remaining, a road trip to South Warren next Friday.  If they clear that, they'll await the results of the second Greenwood/Warren Central game to find out if they still have a chance at the 1 seed, or if they'll be playing Warren Central on the road in the district semifinals.

What has to happen for Purples to get #1 seed by themselves? I know it’s unlikely but enlighten me.

Coin toss is the only realistic path. Technically, if Greenwood were to lose to both East (at home) and Central (on the road), giving Greenwood three losses, then Bowling Green would win it outright (if Central also suffered an additional loss to East or South Warren ) or via the head to head tiebreak w Warren Central, which was the winner of the second meeting (Bowling Green). But Greenwood isn’t gonna lose to East, so a three way tie for first and a coin toss is only way. I take coin toss to mean the Friday Night Lights scenario where everyone flips, and whoever has a side that doesn’t match someone else will get the top spot.

Wow!  I had forgotten this.  When I was in high school East was a really good team and challenged for the district.  Guess that just means I'm old.

Also remember when I was in grade school that East went deep into the Sweet 16 and maybe won state?  I really don't remember, except they were a good team.  I think Tommy Compton and further back Dallas Embry were their coaches.  Good coaches and good men.

East never won state, but did make a couple of deep runs.  In 1974, Embry took them to the Sweet 16 semis, falling 89-66 to Male, who then lost to Louisville Central in the championship game (Louisville Central eliminated East in the first round the following year).  Then, they went back to the state semis in 1979, falling to eventual champion Lafayette by 7.  Finally, Compton took them to the state semis in 1997, falling to eventual champion Louisville Eastern by 9.  That loss to Eastern was the last game Warren East has played beyond the district semifinal round, which is crazy when you think about it. 

In all, Warren East won nine region titles in their first 28 seasons.  No other school had won more than four in the time East had been playing.  They have won only three postseason games since, all in the "play-in" round of the 14th District tournament.

I like Warren East and always appreciated them playing the Purples.  But there is a reason they don't play in football anymore and maybe that's why that might extend now to boys basketball as well.  Although I don't like it.
