JC's long road back to normal leads them to Hazard

Records: JC (4-2), PCC (4-2)

BGP Ranking: JC (#3 in 4A), PCC (unranked in 4A)

Series History: Johnson Central leads 7-1 all-time

Table Setter: Life throws us all a curveball every now and then. But in the sports world, the death of your coach, one of the great leaders and motivators in the game, in the middle of the season is more like a fastball that's a little too high and inside and thrown with bad intentions. It can leave you shaken.

The teachings of the late Jim Matney were, among other things, deeply rooted in overcoming adversity. In that regard, Johnson Central football was immensely successful under his watch. There's no reason to think his legacy won't endure, and if last week was any indication of the collective headspace of JC's program, the Golden Eagles are going to be just fine.

A solid Clay County squad had the misfortune of being the first opponent on the newly christened Coach Jim Matney Field. The game unfolded in a fashion that would surely have put a smile on his face. The Golden Eagles blew the Tigers out, 42-6, without ever throwing a pass while amassing 354 rushing yards on 30 carries.

JC now leaves the comfort of home in Paintsville to face a Perry County Central team that was just in Paintsville last week. The Commodores edged 2020's 1A champs by a field goal to end a two game skid where they were outscored 82-14. Their run defense was exposed during those losses, surrendering an average of 322 yards. Needless to say, that doesn't bode well for PCC this week.
