Open Job: Estill County

Featured Replies

Extremely winnable district, placement in region is always near the top, albeit lacking the tradition of Hazard, Knott, and Perry. This is a good basketball job.

I'm hoping they go out of county for this hire. I'd like either Danny Wright or Robert Creech.

Maybe even Bart Williams from Bath County.

Danny Wright, former coach at Lee County? Did a great job there. Where is he now?

Yes. Principal at Lee County High School.

This will be a good job for someone. No pressure really. Easy winnable district.

Estill County and Powell County are the 3rd and 4th largest high school enrollments in the 14th region.

1 Letcher Central  866

2 Perry Central  858

3 Estill County  672

4 Powell County 658

5 Knott Central  553

6 Breathitt County 548

7 Leslie County  460

8 Wolfe County  377

9 Hazard  306

10 Lee County 269

11 Owsley County 223

12 Buckhorn 140

The rest of the the region’s remaining schools have under 100 students.

So, there’s no reason that a determined coach who is active with his elementary programs to build on shouldn’t be strong contenders for a regional title every year in the 14th. Both Estill and Powell have the numbers to do that.

A little surprised that Letcher is the biggest in the region. I would probably have guessed Perry Central, although the numbers are pretty close.

Creech won't leave Wolfe, isn't he born and raised from there?

When they consolidated MC Napier and Dilce Combs into Perry County Central in the late 1990’s they had an enrollment of over 1100. But loss of coal industry jobs have depleted most eastern Kentucky county populations. Same thing with Letcher Central. When Letcher High, Whitesburg and Fleming-Neon combined into LCC they had over 1000 students. Now they’re down to the mid 800s.
Breathitt County had 1100 students in the 1960s and ‘70s. They’re now in the mid 500s. Same for Knott Central. When they combined old Knott Co High, Carr Creek and Hindman in 1975 they had an enrollment of well over a thousand. Now it’s half that.
Estill County and Powell County have actually increased their enrollment numbers over the years due to their location close to Richmond and Winchester, and also Lexington. Residents are close enough to those cities that they can continue to live in their home county and have jobs reasonably close in other counties.

He was born there, played basketball there, and has taught and coached there his entire career. He is Wolfe County through and through. I don’t see him ever leaving the Wolves for anywhere else.

These are rumors and don't have any legs to stand on (are they true? I'm not sure just hearsay) but I have heard both Brian Hall's (former Powell boys and Estill girls head coach) and Kevin Spurlock (Former Perry Central coach) names in Irvine.

Yesterday I had heard that Brian Hall was the front runner but I'm not sure how since the job was just posted that day.
