2021 Baseball Stat Reporting Lacking

Another angle....there's soooo much barking from baseball parents about lack of coverage/lack of media attention/unfair balance of attention to football & basketball vs baseball. Some justified (Travis Smith for example this year) and some of that is just typical whiny parent nonsense. Sometimes that also comes from programs having success that don't quite understand why they're not getting "respect".

One would think in order to get attention, recruiting interest (especially from afar) programs would at least give a cursory attempt to keep and publish/report stats. The fascinating thing is this year there are some upper echelon teams blowing off stat reporting. Usualy it's just the struggling teams that chuck stats midway through....

Again, this is only the second year (2019 being the first) where stats have been required to be reported. Did the upper echelon teams you mention report stats in 2019 and not this year. Just looking at the number of teams reporting, it appears that more are reporting this year in year 2 than in 2019. With only a year and a half of data, it's really impossible to say the effect that stat reporting has had, and who regularly reports and who doesn't.

If stat reporting were the end all and be all to recruiting and attention, I'd guess it was just about impossible to get either before 2019.

Not sure why you incorrectly interpreted that I said stats were the "end all be all". Again,  it's about ENHANCING. Big difference. Are you really going to stand on a platform that statistical information and getting information out about kids isn't a good thing?

Yes they can be important. Any information is a good thing, and I didn’t mean to imply that stats are bad. My point was that KHSAA stat reporting is still basically brand new, and kids were managing to get next level opportunities without them being published and easily acceptable. And often, stats don’t mean a thing if you don’t have the other measurables that people look for in recruits. We’ve all seen kids with monster numbers get ignored because they don’t fit the “profile” where kids with lesser numbers get offers because they are off the charts in size, speed, velocity, etc.. But yes, having stats out there is better than not having stats.

Also, it seems that one of the points of the thread is that for whatever reason, teams aren’t reporting stats like they did in the past. The truth is no teams were reporting stats prior to 2019 because the KHSAA didn’t require it. There is only one year to compare this year to, and bottom line is more teams are reporting stats than in 2019.

I had a statistician bring it to my attention that you're incorrect about 2019 being the first year that stats were required to be reported. The KHSAA began mandating stats in the 2017 season, per the following two releases:

03/08/2017 – NEW PROCEDURE ADOPTED FOR MONITORING PITCH COUNT AND MAINTAINING BASEBALL STATS FOR KENTUCKY SCHOOLS

The KHSAA has partnered with MaxPreps to manage and post pitch counts for the 2017 playing season. MaxPreps works in combination with GameChanger, among other stat entry options to allow for member schools to maintain accurate pitch count data and eliminate the paper forms that were used as part of the 2016 season. GameChanger is the most popular on-site mechanism for stats collection used by more than half of the KHSAA member schools and is available at no charge. In addition to GameChanger, KHSAA member schools can utilize MaxPreps own stat entry options or seven other stat partners to maintain accurate pitch count data.

Schools are required to enter pitch counts following a contest. Each school is required to keep its own pitch count. It is still required to confirm counts between innings including confirming in all postseason contests with the DPCR (Designated Pitch Count Recorder) for the tournament.

Beginning with the 2017 season, the KHSAA will produce weekly statistics for baseball and softball teams using the data collected through MaxPreps. The production of compiled statewide statistics will begin approximately the week of April 3.

04/19/17 – BASEBALL, SOFTBALL STAT LEADERS NOW AVAILABLE AT KHSAA.ORG

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 19, 2017

Baseball and Softball fans will have additional content available at KHSAA.org this season as a result of the Association’s new partnership with MaxPreps. Statistical leader reports for each sport will be compiled every morning from data provided by MaxPreps, the official source for statistics of all KHSAA contests. In addition, individual game stats will be incorporated into the KHSAA/Riherds.com Scoreboard, which remains the official source for all KHSAA scores, schedules and rosters.

Member schools are solely responsible for submitting statistical information through MaxPreps, and maintaining rosters, schedules and scores through the KHSAA/Riherds.com Scoreboard. Those failing to meet the requirement to enter stats, maintain rosters and schedules, or report scores in a timely fashion are subject to penalties from the Commissioner’s office, including fines and other actions within the constraints of Bylaw 27.

If a school or individual is omitted from the stat leaders report, or information is not updated, that means the team in question did not update its statistics prior to that morning’s automated update (7 a.m. ET). More information on entering stats through MaxPreps can be found at https://goo.gl/IqhXfc.

The enhanced statistical reports will also be incorporated into the KHSAA’s fall and winter sports as available.

I stand corrected. I was looking at the KHSAA site, which does not show stats prior to the 2019 season. That being said, it’s still somewhat new, and based on what I can tell, more teams are reporting this year than in the previous year.
