Simon Kenton 75 Walton Verona 67 (32nd District Finals)

Featured Replies

The Simon Kenton Pioneers are the 32nd District Champs as they got past the Walton Verona Bearcats, and now both teams will move on to play in the 8th Region Tournament. Niece had 30 to lead the Pioneers.

How many 8th region appearances for SK now?

15 in 16 years. More importantly maybe - what happens when they get there?

SK has never won the 8th, but Steiner has had them in the finals three times, and the Pioneers have had some very impressive performances in those games.   This year, the Pioneers look to be the primary challenger to Oldham County, the favorites coming into New Castle.

SK's three trips to the 8th Region finals:

2006 - Shelby County 67 SK 56

2007 - Oldham County 63, SK 57

2014 - South Oldham 50, SK 47

All three games were very competitive.

These two 32nd district teams figure to be in the mix in the region tourney; they currently rank in the top 4 of the 8 teams that qualified.

Per the current BGPreps 8th Region rankings:  (number is the ranking in the final 8th Region ranking):

1 - Oldham County (5-0 vs. 8th Region foes, but only played Collins and North this year, of the below 7 challengers)

2 - Simon Kenton  (7-1 against 8th Region, but only 3-1 against this field, with a win over Owen, two wins over W-V, and a loss to North)

4 - Collins  (9-3 overall vs 8th Region, but 3-2 against the tourney field, with wins over W-V, North Oldham, and Henry County, and losses to Oldham County and Anderson County)

5 - Walton-Verona  (12-4 overall vs 8th Region; 3-3 against the field with two wins over Owen County and a victory over Henry; two losses to SK and one loss to Collins)

7 - North Oldham  (only 5-9 overall record - but 4-3 against 8th Region teams.   The Mustangs are 1-2 against this tournament field, with a win over SK and losses to Oldham and Collins)

12 - Henry County (Henry played 18 games against 8th Region teams, going 11-7, but the Cats only played 5 games against tournament foes, going 2-3 with wins over Anderson and Owen, and losses to Owen, Collins, and W-V)

14 - Owen County (Like Henry, Owen played a lot of games - 20 - against 8th Region teams, winning 12.   But the Rebels have only faced three of their tournament foes, going 1-4.   Owen split two games with Henry County, lost twice to W-V, and also fell to SK.)

15 - Anderson County  (Anderson is the only team in the tournament with a losing mark against 8th Region rivals, going 3-6.    Anderson only played two tournament teams, beating Collins by 1 point and losing to Henry County by one point.)

Thanks.  I honestly didn't have a clue who else was in the 8th region. Simon Kenton being in the 8th has never made much sense to me.

While it might make more geographic sense for SK to still be in the 9th, all of the 8th Region schools are pretty geographically far-flung, not just SK.  It's a large region.   SK just happens to be one of the fringe schools, like Anderson County and Woodford County.    Honestly, SK makes a lot more sense than Woodford or Anderson even - and Anderson's been in the 8th forever - since SK is close to W-V, Grant County, Williamstown, and Gallatin County high schools.

And the 9th already has 20 schools....how many is too many?

It is kind of funny, though.  Kenton County has a team in the 8th (SK), 9th (Dixie Heights), and 10th (Scott High).

Back to the thread, though.....I think SK and W-V will both be strong challengers in the 8th Region tournament this coming week.
