South Oldham hosts Bullitt East in Crestwood on Wednesday, 1/20/21 at 7:30 pm ET.

The Dragons (0-1 currently) are scheduled to play North Bullitt on Monday beforehand, on the road, before returning home for their home opener against BE.

Bullitt East (2-1) will be idle until Wednesday.

Thoughts?    South looked very resilient in an opening-day loss to Oldham County, 59-51.   Ben Michel had 17 points and Cole Davis 11 to lead the Dragons, who shot 60% from the floor in the loss and made 10 of 17 threes.    South went ten deep in the game, and nine players scored.    Davis and backup Andrew Nunley both hit 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.    The Dragons inability to get to the line (just 1 of 4 for the game) was costly, though, as Oldham outscored them by 13 at the charity stripe, and the Colonels' dominance on the glass helped give Oldham a huge advantage in shots taken, with OC getting off 49 attempts to just 33 for South.

Bullitt East owns an impressive victory over CAL, 84-76 (to compare, the Centurions, who have played a brutal schedule, lost to Trinity by 6, DeSales by 6, and Covington Holy Cross by just 1 - all strong contenders in their respective regions).   The Chargers also beat Grayson County, but lost their most recent game by 19 to John Hardin.

BE has only posted the stats for the CAL game, but they shot 54% in that contest, led by junior Tucker Blanford (24 points) and senior Will Blanford (22 points).

Steve Simpson of South is entering his 21st year in Crestwood.  By far the most successful coach in Dragon history, Simpson has coached South during the Dragons' 8 most successful seasons and all 3 of their Sweet 16 appearances.   Sitting at 389 wins, he should reach 400 victories this season sometime.

John Hardin game was a bit closer than the score indicates.  Don't get me wrong, John Hardin was never in danger in that game, but for most of the 2nd half, it was a 5-8 point game and then towards the end, when BE extended their defense to try to force some turnovers and take some chances, it led to some open layups and real easy looks for John Hardin.  The Chargers are young and will no doubt improve as the season goes along.  BE will play 8-10 guys, but a majority of their scoring comes from 2 players.

No sir, won't make this one.  My son plays for East, but he's just a freshman.  With ticketing restrictions, home games we can make....but there aren't enough tickets to go around for the road games.  Good luck with the broadcast and I'll definitely check it out.

I'm really looking forward to this game!  I believe this South Oldham vs Bullitt East game will be the most telling game of the season for both clubs.  From my perspective, both teams trying to find their way & their identity with some limited experience.  South has an emerging core of players (Michel, Davis, etc), while BE has the Blanford brothers that can really play.  South probably wants to play fast, and shoot 3's (not a surprise), and BE probably wants to drive to the basket & score or draw a foul.  BE is scrappy and tough.  I'm a dragon fan, so I'm rooting for them.  This will be a real test.  I think the winner of this game will probably take a big step forward, with momentum & confidence.

I'm going with BE in this one.  Hoping Coach Couch and the guys can pull it out.  Cam Brogan will be key in this game.  If he can drive and penetrate the lane, it will open up a lot for East.  I'm going with him being able to do that tonight.

I was pleasantly surprised with South's effort against Oldham County. Going into that game, with all the new players and question marks, I feared the worst.  I know 'moral victory' is a 4 letter word, but just losing by 8 points - well, there were some encouraging things coming out of that game.  Then we play North Bullitt, and based solely on who NB had played, and lost to, I thought South Oldham would win that game going away.  They did not, won by 10 and it was a 1 point game fairly late.  There were some discouraging things coming out of that game.  So, what to make of tonight?  I don't know.  This South team is almost entirely new, and without the benefit of summer and fall practice.  My guess is it will be an up and down year, and that we won't know what they are, really, for several more weeks.  Bottom line, without knowing much at all about BE, I'll be a little surprised if South pulls out a W.  But I'll be there cheering them on, just the same.......
