NobizLikeShowbiz
I was attending EKU during the Ford era. I was not very impressed by his teams. His last season he did have a good year but if you look at the prior seasons, even at Campbellsville his resume isnt as impressive. I dont think you will see Travis Ford at UK anytime soon. So lets see him succeed at UMASS before we give him a key to RUPP. In my eyes these stats look like he consistently improved... Season School Overall Pct. Conf. Pct. Notes 1997-98 Campbellsville 16-17 .485 7-5 .583 Mid-South Semifinals 1998-99 Campbellsville 28-3 .903 10-2 .833 Mid-South Coach of Year 1999-00 Campbellsville 23-11 .676 8-4 .667 NAIA National Tournament/Mid-South South Semis 2000-01 Eastern Kentucky 7-19 .269 1-15 .062 2001-02 Eastern Kentucky 7-20 .259 3-13 .188 2002-03 Eastern Kentucky 11-17 .393 5-11 .313 2003-04 Eastern Kentucky 14-15 .483 8-8 .500 OVC Semifinals 2004-05 Eastern Kentucky 22-9 .710 11-5 .688 NCAA First Round/OVC Champion This maybe the biggest accomplishment... "Ford used his team's success to his advantage during the recruiting process, landing a class that has been ranked No. 28 nationally by HoopScoop Magazine" So to me that looks like a pretty decent resume. Hangman
I love how a coach has a good game and all of a sudden he's the guy to lead UK off into the sunset... And then a few days later you hear nothing about it. Wasn't it Crean last week? Pelphrey a few times last season? Then all of a sudden you hear nothing about them.
cvillecat
Why is it that each time a former Kentucky player who is coaching has a little success our so-called fans start blabbing about the guy being the next UK coach? None of these guys have won anything significant so why do we do this to ourselves? Most guys from Kentucky know about the ridiculous expectations that would be placed upon them and would not dare say "YES" to coach our team. The very fans that talk about how great it would be to get one of the 'ole Kentucky guys would be starting a new thread the day after the guy loses two games in a row or fail to win a National Championship his first year titled "FIRE THE COACH"! Tubby will be okay and his young team will only get better. If we didn't place those unrealistic standards or expectations on the program or the coach we would see that Tubby isn't that bad. Someone said in another thread that in the future we will have a hard time filling the coaching position because of the expectations! We don't have losing seasons and we don't go to the NIT year in and out and every now and then we will win the big one but you can't expect any coach to win the National Championship every year and with the NBA restrictions there is too much parity in college ball for any one team to dominate year in and out. Joe B. Hall didn't win many big ones and he is idolized at UK for some reason! Let the coach do his thing and I'm sure you guys will be proud of our team in the long run. Don't worry about who's ranked ahead of us now, I like our chances in March! The last time we won it all we were not extremely talented or ranked so all it takes is a run at the right time! Very Good post!:thumb:
firebird
What are some of these character issues, please enlighten us? From what I know Ford is a class act!Seems like I can remember EKU having to sue him or threaten to sue him to get something like over $300,000 of their money back when he took the UMass job. I want to say it involved the illegal manner in which he broke his existing contract with EKU and refused to pay them back. Seems like I can remember something about UMass having to step into the ordeal and pay it off for him. I am sure that someone else may have a better recollection of what took place. HOPKINSVILLE TIGER
Yeah and your point is? You do know I am a huge Tubby supporter dont you? If Tubby were to leave, then Ford is a guy that I would like because he is an up and coming guy, and would play the style of basketball that alot of people like. And it would atleast cut down on some of the stuff people always complain about on here, on how Tubby doesn't play that fun of a style... And then there would be no need for places like BGP because there would not be a need to complain about Kentucky recruiting, coaches, style of play or anything else? These people would find a new thing or group of things to complain about regardless of who the coach is at UK? It's in their blood, get through the so-called BLUE BLOOD that some claim to have and you will see the complain cells right below! As I said earlier, the very same people who thinks he would do well would show up at games to boo the coach as well as start the FIRE THE COACH threads and links. At this point, everyone in the state should know our fans and how they react to anything less than perfection! Non UK fans have a ball listening to our fans SUPPORT our team. I'm sure that's the reason why we have so many of them on BGP now!
oldrambler
Well usually me and you agree on alot, but this I do disagree on this one. You have to take into account how he already turned two programs around, and now seems like he is starting to turn UMASS around too. He really has never got the chance to really establish himself anywhere, because once he starts to turn a program around, he then gets a better opportunity and then moves on and has to start the rebuiliding all over again. So for most of his years in coaching he has been just rebuilding, he hasn't had the chance to really settle down at one place and start to earn alot of recognition. But I think at UMASS this is a place he will stay at for awhile, and really will establish himself as one of the better young coaches around, and then would be worthy of possibly coming to UK or some other bigger program IMO... :thumb: I respect yours and others opinions on bgp also and I do agree with you most of the time. This was JMO and I was not saying he is terrible just that I don't think he is close to ready for the U.K. stage. Thank you for disagreeing in a respectful manner.:thumb: I can respect that.
