KHSAA to adjust RPI

Featured Replies

Running Clock or margin of victory being used would penalize you for playing better teams close or being in a better district where you don't blow everyone out.

It's not being used for anything in roundball, yet. I imagine the reason they're running the formula is a test run so to speak. In other words I could see them seeding the sweet16 in the not so distant future.

I hope not because it is not very good right now.

I agree, but I can see the writing on the wall. Hopefully they experiment with it for several years and get it right the first time they actually decide to implement it. Giving coaches prior notice to implementing it (so the coaches can adjust schedules if needed) would be nice as well. Unlike how they just rushed the system out in football.

I think it makes more sense to use the RPI for basketball than football. It won’t affect travel, since the tournament locations won’t change. Also there will be more games played and thus more results to calculate the RPI. No more chance of the two best teams playing in the first or second round with the RPI.

Being at the meeting on Thursday, it was said that statistically, given all the calculations going into the football RPI, the OWP change is not that significant and you really have to monkey with it to make a difference in the RPI standings. But changing it to the in-state average makes sense and is a concession to critics who thought OWP and OOWP was too low. They talked about a few criticisms, but the consensus was that it produced a pretty good tournament from Round 3 to the finals, i.e. it did what is was supposed to do.
