Who has been the best quarterback in Class 1A this season?

Featured Replies

What’s your thoughts on who has been the best quarterback in the class? Why do you think so?

1A is deep with good QBs right now - Hash (Campbellsville), McNamee (Pikeville), Kremer (NCC), Heighton (Raceland), Hayden (Paintsville), and Hedges (Eminence), to name a few. But Dalton Ponder gets the nod for me, for the load he's had to carry for Williamsburg. For his career, he's got 6,000+ passing yards, 2,000+ yards rushing, and 128 career TDs accounted for. None of his peers can compete with those numbers.

The numbers on Ponder are clearly above everyone else. The thing that discounts those numbers to some extent is those numbers are "system" numbers. The Williamsburg QBs prior to Ponder have put up similar numbers in their careers.

Prior to Ponder, the Williamsburg QB was Alec Poore. In his senior year Poore had 2,885 yards passing, 548 yards rushing and accounted for 41 TDs.

Prior to Poore, the QB was Skyler Griffith. In his senior year Griffith had 2,604 yards passing, rushed for 834 yards and had 59 TDs total.

Prior to Griffith, the QB was Dalton Sizemore. In his senior year Sizemore had 2,868 yards passing, 511 yards rushing and 43 TDs total.

I don't know who the QB will be next year for Williamsburg, but my guess is whoever it is he will put up 2,800 yards passing, rush for 650 yards and account for more than 40 TDs.

That's fair. My counter point would be the Oklahoma Sooners. They've had an unparalleled run of great quarterbacks over the past two decades, from Jason White to Sam Bradford to Landry Jones to Baker Mayfield to Kyler Murray to Jalen Hurts this year. Four Heisman Trophy winners in that group and no one's ever accused Oklahoma of being a system quarterback school.

And my "system" post is not meant to say Ponder is not a very good player. I am putting perspective on his stats. They are in part a function of the offense he plays in.
