Mayfield led 36-13 at the half. MNH stormed back and took a 50-43 lead at one point in the 4th. Mayfield ties it up at 50 and MNH throws INT with a little over 2 minutes left in game. Mayfield moves the ball down to the one yard line and kicks game winning field goal with 9 seconds left in the game.

I was hoping Jay could’ve pulled off the upset for Madisonville against his old coach.

It was just that close to a #1 seed for Madisonville. As it played out, instead of getting a win to vault to #1 in the district, they will be #3 and travel to Logan County.

He came very close lol. I think MNH quarterback was better than most thought especially running the ball.

Kade Neely got the interception for Mayfield. He then ran the wildcat to perfection. He is one heck of a player.

There was a Neely who was a RB for Mayfield in the late 90’s that was pretty good. I assume Kade is his son?

Yes. Bo Neely. He is an attorney in town.

Madisonville North Hopkins

Passing- Hayden Reynolds 20-37-2-235

Rushing- Jeriah Hightower 27-177, Reynolds 10-115

Receiving- Nick Grant 5-67, Metheny 4-51

QB Hayden Reynolds of Madisonville was far better than I anticipated. He made play after play throughout the game to keep MNH in it and even hold the lead at one point late in the game. I felt terrible for the kid when he threw the INT to Neely with just over 2 minutes left in the game. Hightower was as good as advertised. Mayfield gang tackled him in the backfield several times but every time he got past the line of scrimmage with a head of steam he ripped off a big run. He doesn't look to make you miss much but rather gets his big body to full speed as quick as possible and dares the defenders to get in his way. He was fun to watch

For the entire first half Madisonville played man to man coverage with all 11 defenders playing under 5 yards from the line of scrimmage. This was a huge mistake and maybe cost MNH the game. They seemingly dared Mayfield to throw the ball and beat them one on one and Mayfield did so at will through the first half of the game. MNH came out of halftime with a completely different approach on defense. They backed all the DBs off the ball and receivers as they should have from the beginning.

Coming out of halftime down 36-13 Madisonville marched straight down the field for a score and 2-point conversion. On the ensuing Mayfield drive Stinson was hit as he threw on the first play and the ball went straight up in the air and into the hands of a MNH linebacker who took it back for six. They went for 2 there and converted again. Next drive Mayfield went away from what got them their lead, seemingly trying to slow down and regroup. They ran the ball 3 straight plays for a 3 and out. Madisonville then went down and tied the game up still in the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter was back and forth. Mayfield converted a 4th and 15 from the MNH 35 yd line with about 4 minutes left when they were down 50-43. They scored a couple plays later to knot it up at 50. The 2nd play of the next drive Reynolds the INT to Neely and from there the Cardinals wore down the game clock and kicked the FG from the 1 yd line for the win with 9 seconds left.

Madisonville has the potential to make a little bit of noise in the 4A playoffs and even a chance to make the final four in my opinion. They obviously could also lose in the first round to Logan County who has already beat the Maroons this once this year.

Mayfield showed once again what they are capable of on the offensive side of the ball. On the flip side they reverted back to showing how incapable they can be on the defensive said of the ball. I really don't know what to think about this team considering they have given up 50 and 45 points in 2 games this season. They have the offense no doubt but that defense is not going to get the job done in the late rounds of the playoffs.
