Very stressful game if you are a Mustangs fan.

Mustangs fumble the ball away on our first play from scrimmage. Bellevue recovers, Aaron Adkins finds Gunnar Barnes for a 26 yard touchdown, and it's 6-0 Bellevue with 10:02 in the opening stanza before the fans were comfortable in their seats.

Again Bellevue scores early in the second quarter, capitalizing on yet another Mustangs fumble, this time a 59 yard touchdown toss from Adkins to Barnes.

12-0 Tigers.

Brossart had a 65 yard touchdown pass from Trevor Schadler to Jacob Leicht called back, and on the next series Bellevue scored again, the third Adkins to Barnes connection of the half, and following a 2 point conversion, it was 20-0 and things were looking bleak for the visitors, who were playing without the services of Sam Howard, the starting running-back.

Big Mo switched sides of the field as the Mustangs sensed the urgency with 2:22 to go in the half, when Trevor Schadler hooked up with Grant Haubner for a 9 yard touchdown, completing a 57 yard drive and when sophomore Andrew Schwartz split the uprights, the Mustangs were on the board, albeit trailing 20-7.

The Tigers were forced to relinquish possession of the ball just before the half, and Schadler made them pay, throwing a 57 yard strike to Devin Carson for a Brossart TD. Schwartz was again golden, and we were back in the game, trailing 20-14 at the break.

Neither team could muster a first down on the first three possessions of the second half, but on Brossart's second series we marched the piggy 64 yards, and scored a touchdown, when Schadler was scrambling, and found big Dave Govan to knot the contest at 20-20. An ensuing Mustangs TD at the 1:28 mark of the 3rd quarter, a four yard run by Jed Martin, who had just rambled 36 yards after we had recovered a Bellevue fumble. Schwartz's third PAT gave the Stangs a 27-20 lead and it appeared that the Mustangs might draw off for a convincing win.

But, not to be. Bellevue refused to go quietly into the night, scoring at the 9:21 point of the 4th quarter on a 4 yard Gavin Hayes run, bringing them to within a point of the leaders at 27-26. A fake extra point attempt resulted in an incompletion, and the Mustangs would survive the Black and Gold Tigers on this night by the final 27-26 score.

With the win the Mustangs improve to 2-1, the Tigers fall to 0-3.

Brossart will observe a bye week next week, and then host the Ludlow Panthers on Friday, September 20th. There is a possibility that this game could christen the new Mustang Athletic Complex on Gilbert Ridge Road, with "possibly" being the operative word.

Bellevue hosts St. Bernard (OH) next Friday night at Gilligan Stadium.
