Mustangs played tough and earned hard fought victory. NCC struggles continue - the fan base is not happy. Personnel choices are questionable at best at this point for NCC. One of Bred’s best -Howard sat entire 2nd half as they struggle to score 58 points. Iles and Mueller also sat a lot. Don’t know circumstances but all kids looked healthy.

Physical as you would expect. Opponents who used to be teammates and guys who have have battled each other since grade school. Brossart has more weapons. Schumacher led the Mustangs out of the gate early. I’d be surprised if Mullikin didn’t have a double double for the Breds.

NCC weapons were on the bench. Except Mullikin and Jefferson - other 3 offensive standouts sat most of 2nd half.

Not too take away Mustangs effort though - they played hard and tough and Schumacher set tone early.

Full house in Alexandria for the annual battle of the Campbell County Catholics.

For the past seven games in the past seven years the Brossart kids have shown up, dressed up, and hooped it up, only to go home unfulfilled at the end of the night. Last night it was our kids, our fans, and our team who got to savor the moment of a solid 73-56 Brossart win over NCC.

J.D. Schumacher burst the Mustangs from the gate early on, scoring 11 of his game-high 21 points in the first quarter, as the Mustangs pushed out to a 24-15 first quarter lead, and expanded the lead to 30-17, prior to the Breds landing four 3-point goals late in the second period, narrowing the Brossart advantage to 33-28 at halftime.

The Mustangs owned the pivotal third quarter, outscoring the Breds 12-1 in the opening minutes of the second half, and 20-7 for the period as the lead became 58-40 with eight minutes remaining in the game.

Late in that third quarter, J.D. Schumacher added a definitive two-handed slam dunk - his second in five outings, followed by a 3-pointer buzzer beater to end the period. With 3:09 to play in the game, the Mustangs enjoyed our longest lead of the night at 70-50, and then cruised to the 73-56 final score, as the Mustangs ended a seven year win drought vs the Thoroughbreds.

Schumacher and NCC's Evan Mullikin matched 21 point scoring performances. J.D.'s effort was complimented by 17 from Ethan Eilerman, Carson Schirmer delivered15 points while hitting 11 of 13 from the free-throw line, and 10 from Bryson Wieland. The other Mustangs starter, Allen Jump just missed double-figures with 8. Caleb Jefferson added 16 for the Breds. The Mustangs improve to 16-8 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds extend their current losing streak to five, while falling to 9-13 on the season.

The Mustangs travel to Scott on Monday night in what has become a mute district seeding game, as Campbell County defeated the Eagles last night to claim the 37th District Number One seed, setting up a Brossart-Scott district tournament semi-finals. With that being said, the Mustangs will still need to clear the Calvary Christian hurdle this coming Thursday night in Taylor Mill to solidify those district tournament projections.
