The rise and abrupt fall of Fairview football would make for a good 30 for 30 on ESPN.

More like a "True Crime" series.

A lessor known story, but one that has some good "it" factor.

 

1987 Raceland versus Fairivew at Fairview.

 

In the pre-season, the Daily Independent had Bill Tom Ross and Rex Cooksey on the cover nose-to-nose, in anticipation of the match-up.

 

Raceland held a dominating record in the series, but this was the year Fairview thought they would win big. Raceland coach Bill Tom Ross bought a delapalated charter bus and had it painted in the Raceland colors and had "Raceland Rams" lettered down the side. He asked Fairview coach Rex Cooksey if they could drive the bus onto the Fairview track to get players through the hostile environment to the other end of the field. Cooksey agreed. One of the worst decisions ever, as the big "looked like new" bus rolled down the track, the Fairview players all stopped pre-game and watched in amazement. Big momentum moment.

 

Raceland's star receiver was Mark Kirk, known as "Captain Kirk". Fairview's lock down corner was Scotty McIntire. There were signs everywhere with the Captain Kirk and Scotty phrases. I remember one, "Captain Kirk, Scotty is going to beam you up". And, not to disappoint, Mark Kirk caught the pass that set up the winning touchdown in the waining seconds of the game. Many Fairview fans still argue he was out of bounds when he caught that pass, but film shows he had about three feet to spare.

The story of the 33 game losing steak from 2000 to 2003 for the Ludlow Panthers. From the lowest of lows to where a program that almost didnt have enough players for a game in 2002 when there was only 13 players for a game 3 hours away and one of those players forgot his helmet.

 

To when they broke their losing streak in the most crazy ending to a football game possible. Winning all game and up 19 to 12 with 40 seconds left and the other team facing 4th and 18 and only needing a stop to end the losing streak. To giving up a 35 yard gain on the play that led to a td and a 2 point conversion go give the other team a lead with 25 seconds left 20 to 19. Then to make matters worst the other team for some reason onside kicks it and recovers it. So now looks like the losing streak will continue, as the other team has the ball with only 25 seconds left. Luckily Ludlow had all 3 timeouts, so after 3 knees where the other team tried to run time off the clock. They were forced to punt. Ludlow got a nice return and had 5 seconds left. Ludlow threw a hail mary where the receiver made a diving catch barely getting his knee bounds to win the game 25 to 20 to break the 33 game losing streak. Ludlow went on to earn a playoff spot that year for the 5th time in its history, back when you still had to earn a playoff spot due to only 4 classes.

 

Could honestly continue it and make it a movie for that whole 2003/2004 school year. As the boys bball team went on to set a record for wins in school history and a All A classic regional finals appearance. Then the baseball team winning the first district title in its school history, by first ending CovCaths season in the first round of district play, even though Covcath was ranked in the top 10 in the state. For one of the biggest upsets in district play in state history.

 

Obviously I'm a little biased since I am from Ludlow lol. However that sure seems like it would be a good movie to me.
