The top tier of teams has been 4 for all of this season, one more team has been added. Murray has shown that they can hang and even beat any of those top teams given the right circumstances. Mayfield meanwhile is struggling to match last year’s success while Paducah Tilghman again has no consistency to how they play. Meanwhile McCracken continues its Cinderella season now 9-0 and the team nobody is talking about Graves County is still yet to lose to a team in KY. Things are already starting to heat up in Region 1. Here are this week’s rankings:

 

1. McCracken County – Coach Burlin Brower

BGP #11

2018-19 record: 9-0

Week’s Record: 3-0

The Mustangs continue their dominance over Western Kentucky teams. This weeks victims were Ballard Memorial in a blowout, Lyon County in a blowout, and Marshall County in a low scoring affair. Noah Dumas carried the load for the Mustangs leading them in scoring against Ballard Memorial and Lyon. Jackson Sivills did not play against Ballard Memorial. Things may get a little tougher for McCracken as they take the long road trip to Palm Beach, Fl where they will play in the Holiday Basketball Classic.

 

2. Graves County – Coach Joshua Frick

2018-19 record:9-1

Week’s Record: 2-0

The Eagles won both of their games this week, both against out of state teams. Jordyn Noranjo broke out in both games scoring 22 against Evangelical Christian, TN and then 30 against Cairo, IL. Graves will now head to Bowling Green to face South Warren in the opening day of the Meijer Holiday Classic. The schedule isn’t set after that, however there are some possible tough matchups for the Eagles including Madisonville, Bowling Green, and Murray.

 

3. Mayfield – Coach Chris Guhy

BGP #12

2018-19 record: 6-4

Week’s Record: 3-1

Mayfield had some quality wins this past week and a close loss sandwiched in between. The Cardinals defeated Calloway County, Valley, and Murray, but took a loss to Paducah Tilghman 66-64 on PT’s home court. This makes sense as Mayfield only beat PT by 6 in early Dec in Mayfield. The Cardinals are not nearly as sharp this year as they were last, but don’t count this team out. They have loads of talent and are still gelling after all the football players are getting into gear. Come All “A” and region tournament, they will be a very tough out.

 

5. Murray – Coach Dior Curtis

2018-19 record: 4-6

Week’s Record: 2-2

Murray has played one tough schedule to open the year. No doubt it has been the most difficult schedule in Region 1, and they are showing they can compete with the region’s best. This week they has an easy win against Christian Fellowship before taking it to Paducah Tilghman on PT’s own floor, 60-53. This moves them up into the #4 spot in the region rankings. They lost to Mayfield 60-51 in a close game and then just missed a win against Valley 70-69.

Still doesn’t get any easier for the Tigers, now they travel to Bowling Green to play against BGP #16 Bowling Green in the Meijer Holiday Classic….wow.

 

4. Paducah Tilghman – Coach Roderick Thomas

2018-19 record: 6-4

Week’s Record: 2-1

Paducah Tilghman has been known the past few seasons as a real Jekyll and Hyde team. That idea of play has not escaped them this year either. They started off winning 3 games, then lost 4 of 5 including to Mayfield, Graves, and Murray. Then something flipped and they defeated a good Valley team and then BPG #12 Mayfield 66-64. Tyus White and Avery Strayhorn, the two PT transfers, have been critical in the Tornado wins. If Coach Thomas can keep those two involved then Tilghman can do some damage in region 1.

 

 

 

6. Marshall County – Terry Birdsong

2018-19 record: 4-6

Week’s Record: 0-2

Marshall County didn’t fair well in the tournament in Washington DC lost 2 of the games, but they were in both games, they just couldn’t close them out. They lost 7 and 6. Their reward for the tournament, playing BGP #11 McCracken County. They once again played them close, but couldn’t pull out a win as they lost their 3rd straight. They now host the Marshall County Holiday Classic in which they will play Hopkins Central, Valley, and Apollo, all teams they can beat and get back on the winning track.

 

7 Carlisle County – Coach Brian O’Neil

2018-19 record: 7-4

Week’s Record: 1-1

The Comets lost to Caldwell County 73-56 while defeating Vienna, IL 65-57. They will play in the Magnolia Bank Holiday Classic starting Thursday where they face BGP#5 LaRue County first, before getting Muhlenberg County and Louisville Collegiate.

 

 

8. Calloway County – Coach Brad Cleaver

2018-19 record: 2-8

Week’s Record: 0-3

The Lakers have now lost 8 of their last 9 games, although only 3 of them have been to region 1 opponents and those happened to be the top 3 teams in the region. Their schedule will get a little easier starting this Thursday as they play Livingston Central, Christian Fellowship, and Fulton County.

 

9. Fulton County – Coach Jamie Madding

2018-19 record: 2-4

Week’s Record: 0-1

The Pilots lost to Humboldt, TN 104-73. They will play Christian Fellowship, Calloway County, and Livingston Central this week.

 

10. St. Mary – Coach Greg Overstreet

2018-19 record: 5-5

Week’s Record: 2-1

St. Mary is another team that is tough to figure out region 1. They had a big win at Trigg County before losing to Adair County. They will play in the Carbondale Holiday Classic starting Thursday.

 

11. Community Christian Paducah – Coach Daniel Durrett

2018-19 record: 4-6

Week’s Record: 2-1

The Warriors have now won more game this year than the last three years combined. They took down Hickman County and Danville Christian before losing to Burgin.

 

 

12. Hickman County – Coach Wynn Harris

2018-19 record: 4-8

Week’s Record: 1-3

Hickman took a tough loss to Community Christian before defeating Piggott, AR and then losing back to back games to Trigg County, neither being a close game. They will not play again until June 4 against Carlisle County

 

13. Ballard Memorial – Coach Marla Cooper

2018-19 record: 2-6

Week’s Record: 0-1

The Bombers took a beatdown against McCracken County. They will play again in the Stewart County Christmas Classic in TN. They have lost 4 in a row.

 

14. Fulton City – Coach Jon Dillard

2018-19 record: 2-8

Week’s Record: 0-3

Fulton City lost all 3 games they played this week including to Butler County and Lyon County. They will play in the West KY Hoops Classic against Caldwell County on Thursday.

Avery Strayhorn is not a transfer to Tilghman. Tyus is correct, the other transfer is Amirion (A.J.) Joyce.

 

I agree about the Jekyll and Hyde team for Tilghman though. They are good enough to beat a lot of good teams. Also very capable of losing games they shouldn't.

Perhaps, but outside of their win against schitzofrenic Paducah tilghman i don’t think they e won any games I wouldn’t have expected them to. Webster county isn’t as good as most thought they would be.

 

They’re a nice middle of the pack region 2 team. Nothing more, nothing less.

Murray is a definite surprise. I’m not really surprised by McCracken, they have a d1 talent in Sivills and the Dumas kid has been stellar at times. I’m surprised Tilghman is struggling as bad as they are I suppose, but they’ve done this in recent years and the region has improved as a whole.

Tilghman is trying to fit a lot of pieces together that didn't exist last year. If they're well coached they should be good by the end of the year. Murray has played a brutal schedule and has fared well and seems to be improving. Outside of the dunkfest that University Heights put on them and the Grind Session game they played in Memphis they've been in every game.

PTHS performance in their Christmas tournament could be just what they need to change their early season trajectory. Mustangs can't really be considered a "Cinderella" inasmuch as they have won the Region 1 title 2 of their first 5 seasons. They figured to be in the mix this year and they should stay in the conversation for the foreseeable future.
