Johnson Central 21 Huntington High (WV) 14 (Scrimmage)

Featured Replies

Both teams played 3 sets of 10 plays from the 20. Huntington opened with 2 TDs in the first 7 plays but JC stuffed them the rest of the way scoring 3 TDs to answer. JC QB Riley Preece ran for 1 TD and threw for 2 TD. JC also had a dropped TD pass in endzone.

They are now playing JV. The highly rated lineman for HHS was solid.

Way to represent Kentucky JC!

Where is Huntington ranked in West Virginia?

Looks like 4Th in WVA. I think they are in the large school class. 1,700 or so students.

@15th Region... assuming he played, how did Jackson look? Showing any rust after a year off?

Jackson played. Looked rusty first 10 plays (had two short gains), then turned into the Jackson of old rest of the way. Broke a 41 yard run and 25 yard run while plowing through tackles. Probably had 125 to 135 yards on 6 or 7 carries.

They didn't run him outside any tonight. Was between the tackles.

That's good to hear. Teams on JC's schedule might not share that sentiment, though, lol. Looking forward to seeing what kind of year he's going to have, as well as the team in general.

JC is big and physical as usual. HHS looked wore down at the end and holding their knees.

At this point the offense is ahead of the defense as JC continues to develop depth in the secondary (run defense was solid tonight but can improve) .

The play of junior QB Ryley Preece is what will really surprise people if that's even possible. Kid was really good last two years as starter and looks even more improved this year. In my opinion he is the best QB in school history (and JC has had some good ones) and it's not even close. His play sometimes gets over shadowed but it shouldnt.

Of course Jackson will be the work horse and should go for 2K plus but I look for Preece to run/pass for 2,000+ combine. Not to mention Devin Johnson, Evan Adkins and company. The emergence of Sophomores Zach Russell and Ryan Sartin-Slone at wideouts was an explosive addition tonight as both caught long TDs.

Overall JC has a long way to go to be what they can be, but looked solid tonight. It is just a scrimmage too so take it for what its worth.

It's hard to imagine that a team could lose players the caliber of Gamble, Bingham, Owens, Stalker, and Wells, and potentially be better the next year. But I think that's a real possibility for Johnson Central. I don't want to get too carried away, but on paper, this team looks very, very strong.

You have Binghams little brother who is a freshman now stepping into his spot and he is way better than the older version who got a scholarship to Marshall. Andrew Clifton steps into the line as well. That's a kid that benches 400lbs. Joe Jackson returns in the back field and Devan Johnson (being recruited in the SEC and ACC at MLB) doesn't have a broke arm with cast this year.

Cody Rice might be the fastest kid in the school and he only played at end of season last year. Like I said, the offense is way ahead of defense.

Something else to consider is the large and talented freshman and sophomore classes they have. The freshman are coming off a middle school state championship and very talented at lots of positions. The sophomores are deep and athletic as well.

However, this collection of talent is just that. A collection of talent. It will take time to gel as a team but the potential is there to be very very good. Not 2016 good IMO, but they could get close if they put it all together.

Look for this team to get better as the year goes on. I'm interested to see how the long trip up north on 3 days rest affects JCs preparation and focus. 1A or not, Beechwood is a dang good team that can play with and/or beat anyone outside maybe Trintiy. Should be an excellent scrimmage for both.

He's the kid that seemingly came out of nowhere against Ashland in the playoffs, right? I was at Putnam that night, sitting near some coaches from Greenup and East Carter, and no one knew who he was. He gashed the Tomcats defense on just a few carries. People around me were flipping through their programs trying to figure out who he was and where he came from.

Correct. He is a junior. RB/DB. Played his whole freshman year (to include Ashland games: they had seen him before) and came back out late in sophomore year (last season). Played football every year since 4th grade in Johnson County. Should not have been surprise.

They will be anywhere between 2nd and 5th in the largest classification in WV.

Huntington is the team that beat Belfry to open last year and who Belfry will also open with this year.

They were undefeated in the regular season last year and ranked #1 before losing a close game in the Semi's in an upset to Spring Valley.

Huntington lost their top Offensive player RB jadon Hayes (he won the W equivalent of Mr. Football if I am not mistaken). They also lost their QB and top WR, but return a solid core on Offense.

On Defense they lost five starters I believe but return a superstar Jr LB.

The star of the Huntington team though is OL/DL Darnell Wright. Wright is a 5* All-American and the #2 overall player in the Country rated by Rivals. He is the #1 OT in America, but even if he were recruited as DL he would still be a 4* or 5*. He is that good on both sides of the ball. They also have another massive OL that returns that was a First Team All-State selection.

Good ballclub.

Kentucky comparison is probably one of the best Louisville 6A schools not named Trinity, X, or Male. Frederick Douglass with an All-American would be a pretty good comparison.
