Severe Weather Alert Day for Saturday 2/24/18(UPDATED)

Featured Replies

This Severe Weather Alert Day may be premature but as mentioned in my update last night the severe weather threat for Saturday afternoon into the evening hours has indeed increased. The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the risk area for parts of WKY to a category 3 Enhanced Risk Area for strong to severe storms. The area is from about the Land Between the Lakes area back westward. A Slight Risk Area is from around the I-65 corridor back westward. A Marginal Risk area is confined between I-65 to I-75.

Tornadoes damaging winds and hail will be possible. The wind damage threat could increase as the supercell and the stronger multicells transforms into a line segment. For now, the timing looks to be later afternoon into the evening hours

Check back later today for updates. Also, updates will be sent out to our Twitter page.

As I mentioned earlier. This threat mode maybe premature but since this is the first severe weather threat of the season I wanted to increase everyone's alertness for the possibility of severe weather.

They've been talking about the Ohio river may make it to 60 feet in the next week around Cincinnati. Looks like this storm is tracking north and east, which would flow right into the Ohio River.

With that said, flooding, and weather related stuff fascinates the hell out of me, but I'm hoping folks along the river are prepared for it.

It hit 58 feet in Ashland earlier in the week so I could see 60ft within reach early next week. Ashland is really well protected from flooding due to the flood walls and pumps throughout the city but some of the other towns nearby are more less at the mercy of mother nature. Hopefully everyone in the flood prone areas are preparing and are ready to evacuate.

The Storm Prediction Center has increased the area of all three severe weather categories for Kentucky on Saturday. The Enhanced Risk Area now extends to the Owensboro area on the northern edge. The eastern edge is about Central City area. The Slight Risk Area has had its area increased to now include parts of NKY, Frankfort, Bowling Green and Louisville. The Marginal Risk Area was extended north and eastward also.

Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop and move east-northeastward on Saturday. Tornadoes, wind damage and hail will be possible with the more intense storms.

This is a developing situation. Keep checking back for updates.

The severe threat has increased for later today. Especially for parts of Kentucky west of I-65. The Storm Prediction Center has increased the size of the Enhanced Risk area eastward. It is now west of a line from just west of Hardensburg down to Bowling Green. The Slight Risk Area has been also increased to around the I-75 corridor. The Marginal Risk Area now includes almost all of EKY.

Severe Thunderstorms are expected to develop later today through tonight. These will be accompanied by the potential for damaging wind gust and a few tornadoes some of which could be strong. The severe weather potential seems likely to become maximized across parts of southern and eastern Arkansas into adjacent portions of the lower Ohio Valley late this afternoon and evening. Those in WKY should be especially severe weather alert later today.

Here is the simulated radar from the NAM 3km CONUS model. The time is from 4 pm to 12 am EST. Around midnight the storms should form a line and then transverse across the rest of Kentucky.
