2006 Paintsville Hoops Classic

Featured Replies

Here's the teams that are going to be in this one. I plan on attending but don't know when as of yet.

Morgan County will make it's 3rd appearance in the Paintsville Tiger Hoops Classic. I like the starting times for the Morgan County games...this should maximize the attendance from the folks from Morgan County. The Cougars enjoy this tournament and watching other quality teams as well. I see they are scheduled to play Treasure Coast, Fla. The Cougars are 1-0 vs. the Sunshine state. As two years ago they defeated an athletic Crawford Mosley H.S. from Florida by around 20 points.

This is becoming one of the better tournaments in the state with the quality and level of competition.

There is another 16th region team(East Carter) besides Morgan, and

Elliott Co. was invited but declined!!

Yes, this will make East Carter's 2nd appearance in the tournament I believe.

Some excellent size and talent, in this field. UHA has an outstanding player and both Russellville and North Hardin, have some good size.

Several players from this field, attended some prestigious camps over the summer. Look forward to this event.

Here are some Paintsville Hoops Classic team previews, as complied by BGP.....BGP Basketball Previews

1st Region Heath – Andrew Baer is one of the region’s top 3-point shooters and 6-8 Max McConnell and 6-5 Seth Hart have plenty of offensive potential. The biggest question for the Pirates, again an All A Classic regional contender after a year’s absence from the tournament, is at the point, where four players may audition for the starting job. The hope is that Baer won’t have to assume the role, making it tougher for him to score.

2nd Region University Heights – Phil Keller’s first year as Blazer head coach produced a 20-win season and yet another All-A regional title, but the Hopkinsville private missed out on advancing to the regional tournament for the sixth time in nine seasons. Playing in one of the state’s toughest districts should give the youthful Blazers a chance to show their meddle and make a run at the regional title again in 2006-07. Most of the focus has been directed toward 6-6 junior forward Scotty Hopson, an athletic player who can jump out of the gym and dominate around the basket.

Hopson, who has committed to Mississippi State, still has some raw skills that need to be refined after coming off the bench to scored 12 points a game last year. However, his untapped potential has Hopson ranked among the nation’s elite juniors.

The Blazers will be hard-pressed to replace speedy point guard Josh Mack, but should compensate nicely with the return of 6-4 junior Tyshawn Edmonson (11.3 ppg.) and 5-11 junior DaQuan Brown (5.4 ppg.). The Blazers cemented their status as regional contenders with the addition of 6-10 transfer Ryan Langhi, who averaged a near double-double as a junior at Nashville’s Father Ryan High School last year.

It will be interesting to see how Langhi, a cousin of former Marshall County and Vanderbilt standout Dan Langhi, adjusts to the up-tempo style of the Blazers. If the Blazers have a weakness, it may be lack of depth as Keller primarily used a rotation of eight players last year. Five of those were lost to graduation.

4th Region Russellville – The Panthers are senior laden, like a lot of teams in this region. They have a top guard in Jerrell Mayo who is tough to defend. Tyler Meacham is another good guard. Justin Hinton and Josh Kennedy are forwards while the post is occupied by Justin Rust.

5th Region North Hardin – The Trojans were penciled in as the preseason region favorite in the spring, despite a season that didn’t meet the usual expectations in Radcliff. However, senior forward James Sykes, who nearly averaged a double-double, and his 7-foot-1 sophomore brother Jamarious moved to Georgia over the summer. Despite the losses, the Trojans may still have enough to win a championship in a region where the top teams are restocking the shelves.

Senior guard Andre Autry has the most experience of this year’s projected starters, which should also include junior Maurice Gosa and sophomore La Rod King.

16th Region Morgan County—5 straight 20 win seasons in West Liberty has made the Cougar program the most productive of any team in the 16th region in that span. Multiple district titles and a regional title have made the Cougars into a traditional regional power. The Cougars did lose 4 starters off last year’s remarkable 22-4 team, but don’t think the Cougars are out of talent just yet.

6’4” Katlin Haney is perhaps the most diverse offensive player in the 16th…perhaps the strongest, sturdiest and hardest working athletes, Haney is an exceptional shooter and can create. Look for help from 6’3” Junior Brandon Ferguson, 6’2” sophomore PG Cameron Dunn, 6’0” sophomore Tyler Adkins as well as John Robert Henderson, Wes Montgomery who started 15 games last season.

16th Region East Carter—Brandon Baker will have some talented guards to work with this season. Drew Johnson and Van Burge are capable of putting up big numbers.

Always scrappy and defensive, the Raiders will look to use their quickness to their advantage. Look for a good shooting basketball team this winter from the boys from Grayson

15th Region Paintsville — Not since the Tigers’ state championship run in 1996 has so much excitement been based around one team.

Arguably, Paintsville has been building to the 2006-2007 campaign since Landon Slone burst on the Kentucky hoops scene as a freshman. Slone is one of a handful of starters back to try to lead the Tigers to the promised land this season. With returnees Shane Grimm and J.D. VanHoose, Paintsville simply has every other team in the 15th Region out-gunned.

15th Region Prestonsburg – The BLACKCATS return some good size and will rely on guard play, with a solid post play for Coach Jackie Crisp. Look for Junior 5'-11" guard Bobby Hughes to run the offense and play a key role defensively. Fellow Junior 5'-8" Jordan Hall will be another key player, who will also provide outside shooting. In the post, look for Senior Trevor Patton, a 6'-6" player who will anchor the middle, along with 6'-3" Junior Nathaniel Stephens. Not in BGP preview.

BREWBAKER MONTGOMERY TECH, Alabama

Coach: Chauncey Shines

The RAMS will be a solid team and pass the ball extremely well. Led by 5'-11" Sophomore guard Chris Dixon, who had 11ppg, with 3 assists and 6' Junior Brandon Canady, who let the team in scoring at 11.6ppg. Look for 6'-1" Sophomore Kendall Broughton to add to his 8.5ppg and 6 rb's, for Coach Shines. Ryan Baker and Jesse Vaughn, will be counted on in scoring and defense. This will be their first Hoops Classic. From website Hoops Classic

ALCOA High School, Tennessee

Coach: Micah Marsh

The '06-'07 TORNADOS of Alcoa, will be a very talented and athletic team. Led by 6'-1" Sr Justin Ridenour, 6'-3" Sr Kyrus Lanxter and 6'-0" Jr Brian Summers. Coach Marsh will solid inside play from 6'-4" Sr Ray Sykes and 6'-3" So. Dee Sudderth. This will be their first Hoops Classic. From website Hoops Classic

6th Region Bullitt East – Robert Troutman returns as one of the region's top players and he has some sidekicks that will help the Chargers surpass last season’s 14-win total in their second season in the region. The 6-5 Troutman also averaged eight rebounds a game. Guards Matt Miles and Tyler Downs will also help bolster coach Troy Barr’s roster. The Chargers have just three seniors on the 19-player roster.

7th Region Louisville Moore – Jazzmar Ferguson is one of the top unknown players in the Louisville-area and should lead the Mustangs to a winning season. The 5-11 Ferguson averaged 12 points last season and will be joined by senior guard Kaelin Hall, who averaged 10 points a year ago. Coach Larry Miller also has a pair of players who moved from Puerto Rico in Omar Gonzalez and Jose Lopez. Both are 6-1 seniors.

7th Region Louisville Seneca – Many of the region coaches are calling the Redhawks the sleeper team in the programs second year under Steve Sergeant. Seniors Bilal Davis and Montrel Williams are double figure scorers returning, while junior Domonique Burdette averaged five points last season. Seneca also has one of the regions top freshmen in 6-1 Deonte Maddox.

BALLOU, D.C.,

Coach: Jenkins Dormu

The KNIGHTS will be a solid team and excellent quickness. Led by guards 5'-6" Lionel Robinson and 5'-7" Raheem Osbourne. Look for 6'-3" Jeffery Thomas, along with Kalais Hunt another 6'-3", to provide rebounding and scoring.

The post will be anchored by 6'-6" Lamar Milstead, who will be counted on both ends, along with 6'-2" Chris Reynolds. 6'-0" Marquise Turpin will also contribute on defense and offense This will be their first Hoops Classic. From website Hoops Classic

Tate, FL,

Coach: Joey Murdock

The AGGIES will have considerable size and extremely athletic. Post players like 6'-8" Tyler Colligan will be a factor on both ends, forwards 6'-6" Robert Jackson and 6'-6" DeAngelo Kirkland, along with 6'-4" Jared Wendling and several younger players, that are 6'-2"

PG Jon Goundas and SG A.J. Purifoy, will be relied upon on both ends of the floor. This will be their first Hoops Classic. From website Hoops Classic
