Re-hires aren't the most frequent thing in the world, but they happen from time to time, and often times happen with success (see LaRue County football).

The story here is more around the circumstances of Coach Matt Schmitz' prior dismissal from Newport High School. In May of 2015, Newport Police found Coach Schmitz passed out in his car at 1:45am. After opening his car door and forcibly waking him, the officers noticed a very distinct smell of alcohol and marijuana. Schmitz was arrested, and subsequently plead guilty in exchange for authorities removing jail time from the table.

In the 2014 football season, the season immediately prior to Schmitz's arrest, the Newport Wildcats had one of their most successful seasons in the last 25 years, finishing in the 3rd round of the 2A playoffs with an overall 8-5 record all under Schmitz's watch.

It's no secret that Newport High School is a very challenging situation in general - let alone in sports. If you doubt that, just ask Tim Viox, who just left the football head coaching position after 3 seasons and an overall record of 4-29 with the Wildcats. Coach Schmitz would have at least appeared to have had some things figured out when it comes to the Newport community.

What are your thoughts on the idea of Newport hiring Schmitz back?
