BluegrassPreps Class 5A Football Rankings (10/16) Discussion

Class 5A

The guard may officially be changing in Northern Kentucky. After years of coming up just short to Highlands, Covington Catholic seems to be taking the upper hand in the rivalry and made a statement by obliterating the Bluebirds with a running clock. The name of the game this week is “Cross Town Rivalries”. The headliner is a long awaited battle between Bowling Green and South Warren, but the Battle of Somerset featuring Southwestern and Pulaski County is always a game much anticipated game. Graves County almost handed Christian County their only loss but came up just short. The Eagles look for their elusive statement win against an Owensboro team that will be angry after falling to Apollo.

1. Covington Catholic at Dixie Heights

2. Bowling Green vs. #3 South Warren

3. South Warren at #2 Bowling Green

4. Christian County vs. 4A North Hopkins

5. South Oldham at North Bullitt

6. Madison Southern vs. Anderson County

7. Southwestern at Pulaski County

8. Doss vs. Atherton

9. Apollo at Marshall County

10. Fern Creek vs. Fairdale

The Region 1 playoffs with Bowling Green, Christian County, and South Warren looks to be a slug fest.

True.

Plus Bowling Green and South Warren will BOTH get very tough 1st round games this year (the toughest I can ever remember). They will host Graves County and Owensboro, respectively (based on the results of this weeks games) in the first round. That's a tough opponent for the first round!

BG the favorite, right? What are the chances Christian wins the region?

Then your reward for making it out of the region is Cov Cath before you get to even sniff at state lol.Wow!

Depends on who you ask. As long as Christian County keeps winning, they play at home. that is a big advantage. Christian County gets the only bunny 5A game in Districts 1 and 2. They will have a walk-over (play either Barren Co or Grayson Co) to Week 2.

ALL Teams in Region 1 will have to earn it. With BG & South starting with Owensboro and Graves County in the first round tells you how strong these 2 districts are. Owensboro and Graves County could beat ever team in 5A on a given night including CovCath.

I think CovCath is the clear favorite in 5A. But anyone can be beaten on a given night.

With cross bracketing...do you think it’s fair that district one and two don’t get a break from each other? Lol! Wow!

I'm not a fan of cross-bracketing in general. I just don't see the point.

So now the Doss Region plays the Madison Southern Region. And South Oldham plays CovCaths. Seems like Doss's Region should stay to play South Oldhams. Just my opinion.

Districts 1 and 2 and 7 and 8 will never change. It's just the luck of the draw, but really shows that WKY has very good football in these better teams.

I think the issue for Christian County is that they will almost certainly have to go through both South Warren and Bowling Green to win it. Whoever wins District 1 will only have to go through one of them. As P88 mentioned, they do get an advantage in playing at home and in having one week of an easy game, while both the first round games for the other two are expected to be more difficult - though quite manageable.

For years, we have heard about travel expense concerns in the playoffs. Even spent some time playing inside our district in the initial two rounds. Cross-bracketing is the exact opposite and is subject to the selectivity of the KHSAA as they decide which districts will "get a break" from being paired up against traditional powers in early rounds. If you are good enough, you will still progress. If you are mediocre, you will still get beat. Cross-bracketing can't wave a magic wand and get a trophy for someone. This year, the 5A and 6A cross-bracketing creates certain bracket sides that are much more difficult than the other. The best will still survive. They may just have to drive a bit further.
