Movie Pass...anyone tried it?

Featured Replies

If you want to watch a big movie -- like one of the Harry Potter or Star Wars movies -- on opening night. Can you do that? Can you use it to buy tickets in advance?

They got a bunch of stipulations, according to my coworker.

Like you can only purchase tickets within 30 minutes of the show and when your phone is within a certain proximity of the theater, or something like that.

Sorry, meant 2-3 movies a year...

:lol2: that makes more sense.

MoviePass - Watch New Movies in Theaters

As I understand it, you subscribe for a monthly service at $9.95 per month. For that price you can go to one movie per day at local theaters (not including IMAX or 3D). You are limited to one ticket per day per card.

Sign up and they will send you a "Mastercard" that you will then use to pay for your ticket each time you go. You go onto the app and select the movie you are going to see and the money for the ticket is downloaded onto your card. You then go to the theater and present the card to pay for your ticket.

Local man here in town says that it has worked flawlessly and he has already watched 5 movies in his first month of having the card. With Ticket Prices approaching $10 just two movies a month and you'd be ahead after watching just two movies a month.

I have a movie buff friend who would love this who has rejected the idea of getting a smartphone, and still uses her flip phone.

I do understand her reasons as she's not yet ready to sell her soul like the rest of society has. I've not been too terribly keen about that myself, but I sorta have a toe or two dipped in, but not incredibly so.

Anyhow, this moviepass thing says that you are required to have an android, or an Iphone.

You get a card with moviepass, and other than using the app to search for movie theaters and times (which can also be found elsewhere) why would it be so necessary to have a smartphone, I wonder? :idunno:

I started to get this when they dropped the price from 29.99 a few weeks ago. But then, immediately after they dropped the price, I read AMC was going to fight it any way they could. And AMC is the theater I would mostly use so I was a little worried.

I believe you have to go to their app to select the movie then the money is loaded on the card for the ticket. The company evidently makes a good deal of money selling their ticket sales data as well as from the monthly subscriptions. Without accessing their app to select which movie you are going to see they can't add money to your card. At least that is how I understand it.

Why would any theater fight it, they still get their money when the ticket is purchased. You still have to buy your ticket at the theater before going in. Unless they planned on doing something similar themselves.
