LCA capitalizes on some Pikeville miscues and pours it on late.

Too many turnovers for Pikeville giving short fields.

Pikeville is going to be a problem for teams in a couple years. They are extremely young.

LEXINGTON CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 49 PIKEVILLE 21

The final game of the 2017 Pike County Bowl was between the hometown Pikeville Panthers and visiting Lexington Christian Academy Eagles. Both teams entered this contest, with records of 1-0. From all the talk I have heard, actually read this was suppose to be a white washing by the Eagles. I was able to watch the Eagles last week online and minus a couple of starters, they still looked like a powerhouse. Pikeville had some things happened to them during the off season, that has made them a really young team and one, who could be in for the dreadful rebuilding year.

The Eagles methodically drive the ball downfield and on their tenth play of the drive, Logan Nieves scored on a short touchdown to make this a 6-0 contest, with 5:35 left in the opening quarter. The point after kick went into the Pikeville line and kept this a 6-0 Eagles lead.

The Eagles combo of Jayden Barnhardt, Blane Hardin and Josh McClurg teamed up to get Peyton Boyd Blair for a loss of four-yards, with 3:26 left on the clock. Blair would get some revenge, when he lifted a pass to Jackson Hensley, that resulted in a 66-yard score. The two point conversion run was easily snuffed out by the Eagles, to leave this a 6-6 game, with 2:46 left in the quarter.

With 1:11 left in the quarter, the Panthers defense led by Jesse Sparks and Jon Collum got to the Eagles ball carrier for a short loss. The Panthers emotions were allowing them to play at a very high level thus far in this one, but the big question was could they continue this against such a good team?

At the 31.3 mark Caelan Lebryk made a catch used a few moves to score a 38-yard touchdown, but a personal foul on the Eagles took the points off of the board, and the quarter ended with the game still tied up.

With 9:20 left in the half the Panthers got a big run by Kaden Caudill right at the heart of the Eagles defense, that moved the chains and kept the Pikeville drive alive.

Blair would be sacked again, this time by Blane Hardin for a 8-yard loss and forced a punt, with 7:31 left in the half.

Nieves broke a tackle or two on his way to a 14-yard gain to give the Eagles a big first down, with 5:47 left. From there the Eagles worked the ball to the Panthers 3-yard line and then gave the ball to Dillon Wheatley, who took it in for the score. The point after kick from Tyler Dobbs increased the Eagles lead to 13-6, with 4:49 left in the half.

The Panthers fumbled the ball with 4:40 left and the Eagles Jake Standford pounced on it, at the Panthers 24-yard-line.

The Eagles would get a 3-yard run for a touchdown by,Nieves to go up 19-6. The point after kick was good, making this a 20-6 game, with 3:42 left in the half.

After another Pikeville fumble, at the 1:52 mark of the quarter, the Eagles were back in business, as they recovered the ball. They had 15-yards tacked on due to a Panthers fumble, leaving only 17-yards needed for another score. The score came one-play later on a Wheatley run, that was made easy with the work of his line, who opened up a gigantic hole for him to run through. The point after kick made this a 27-6 game, with 1:36 left in the half.

The Panthers crowd erupted when, Kyle Watkins picked off a pass and took it to the house, with 9:08 left in the third. A two-point conversion run was successful when, Zach Roberts followed his line into the end zone, to make this a 27-14 game.

With 6:59 left in the period Drayden Burton made the catch of the game, that gave the Eagles close to a 40-yard gain and another first down. The ten-play, 66-yard drive came to an end on a 14-yard touchdown by Wade Drake, who avoided a would be tackler to hit pay dirt. The point after was good making this a 34-14 Eagles lead, with 6:35 left in the quarter.

Nieves picked up 36-yards on a nice option play, with 4:11 left. Just 12 seconds later Lebryk caught a pass, broke a tackle to pick up 17-yards. The Eagles made this a 42-14 game, on a 10-yard run by The Newark Catholic Fan Player of the game Dillon Wheatley and a two point conversion pass, with 3:50 left.

Pikeville showed they still had some fight in them when, facing a fourth and one they elected to go for it and the result was a 41-yard run up the gut by, Sparks with 1:18 left.

The fourth quarter would see each team score once more to make this a 49-21 final.

The first score came on a 5-yard catch by, Blaine Hardin, to make this a 49-14 game.

The Panthers would get a 11-yard touchdown run by, Zach Roberts and after the point after kick from 35 Evan Rhodes, we had the final score.
