Jim Schue
I know nothing about how this game went down. I'm just curious from the standpoint of it being since 1998 since Sayre got to the region. With that being said, how long has it been since Sayre won a region game?
Jim Schue
Never mind — same year. Won in the first round in 1998.
Jim Schue
It would appear that 1998 and 2017 are the high points in Sayre history, as research says they've never gotten past the region SFs. When was that school opened?

When was that school opened? The Sayre School opened in 1854 but I believe they began competing in basketball in the 1960's.
mooremiller31
Close game throughout, Sayre just made some plays down the stretch and made free throws. Not Duby's best game but he hit some tough shots. RJ Smith played awesome for the Spartans and Goodman hit a HUGE 3 late for Sayre. Sayre 19/22 from the FT and 10/11 in the 4th quarter, Madison Southern 2/6 from the FT line all came in the 4th. Congrats to Coach Goodman and the Spartans!! Smallhoops
Really happy for the Sayre Spartans. Small school (high school enrollment of 243) having a very memorable year. And this is not a fluke; Sayre is a solid team very deserving to be where they are. Tough challenge with Lexington Catholic up next, but who knows. gchs_uk9
Southern still has never won a region tournament game. I really like what Buttry has done there; the Eagles are pretty solid every year. But this season seemed the perfect combination of a terrific team with a winnable draw. You have to wonder when they'll get over the hump?

At the end of the day I really think their schedule hurt them. If you look at it they only played 5 games against 11th Region opponents during the regular season. Madison Central, Lafayette, Frankfort, Berea, and Model. Wins are one thing but Sayre played a much better schedule and took some losses but were more prepared when it came down to it for this type of game and atmosphere. I really think the better team won the game.
