I am a bit puzzled by your point on Beshear using the word renege. You seem to have a different understanding of the word than I do. I have never hear any racial implication with that word. It is a Latin based word. Are you saying that the word is racist?

 

I'm not saying that and I'm not offended . My point was waiting for media to call someone else on the opposite of the aisle for a stupid gotcha moment that they would on the other side.

Are you asking if we're acting like no one has been called out for pronouncing the word renege "ree-nig" before? Because I can say sincerely that I've never hear anyone called out on that before.

 

I'm a card player, and the term "renege" is a term used regularly in euchre. I've never heard it pronounced as anything other than "ree-nig".

I have played Euchre and Spades most my life. I have used the word that way most my life. But there was a time awhile back on this site I was asked to look into the history of a phrase " call a spade a spade" . A term that came from cards that transformed into a racist slang apparently. So I researched things I didn't know offended.

 

This word does offend some. It does not offend me. The point of my post is lost. If certain people said it, it would be a headline.

Well...I guess I can offer this: In my life, I've never heard the term "renege" (with any various pronunciation) used as a racial epithet, and I've never known it to be misconstrued as one either. On the other hand, I have heard both the term "spade" and the phrase "call a spade a spade" used without racial implication and used intentionally as a racial slur.

I have never heard it used with intent but I have heard it received as such. My point in the topic and what you strayed from isn't the fact I am offended. I have no reason to be. I just want the media to react appropriate.

 

I do not need the latin orgins the fact people have been offended by the pronunciation is easily found on the internet. I am not offended I was making social commentary.

I just don't see how this could be an issue regardless of who said it. It's simply not a word that carries any racial connotation. I've never heard anyone called out for using or get offended by someone using the word.
