Nations tallest dam having troubles in Cali

I bet those in this town wish they had an ARK in their area now.

I did see where there has not been a need for the emergency spillway. i.e. the water never got to that level before.

There is no control of that spillway. If the water gets to 901, it starts to flow over the concrete walls. No human can turn it off. And when its below 901 it will stop - assuming no damage to the structure. The emergency spillway is just a last ditch (big ditch!) route to keep the water from topping the dam structure itself where it would quickly collapse per the video posted above.

Wow. Crazy how much water is missing in the video compared to the current situation.

Flowing over the emergency spillway now - the one that has never been 'used' before. There is no control of its use to even test it. It the last failsafe to protect the dam structure. Unfortunately, the water is going underground right at the concrete wall.

Not good. From looking at the recent photos and videos the ground around the emergency spillway is eroding fast. Seems like the local officials need to start thinking about an evacuation plan for the town that sits downstream.

That's what I was saying in post 6, what good does it do to have an emergency spillway if it is not constructed correctly.

Here is a recent thought on this...

I agree the main Dam won't collapse, but the emergency spillway eroding could still cause a tremendous amount of destruction.

Honestly, it would work out about the same as if the dam broke. They are at a relative elevation and with erosion, the lake could very well drain itself through the natural spillway. I still can't figure out how the engineers didn't see this potentially happening days ago.

Even if they did see it coming what could they do at that point?

Begin evacuating the town below the lake. They're doing that now. They claim the dam could fail within an hour. Several hours ago they said everything is fine and no flooding is expected.

If the people living close to the dam were not smart enough to see what pouring out of it days ago and leave its on them.

The officials and engineers told them that everything was fine. Well, up until about an hour ago. I guess they trusted their elected officials and engineers too much. Are you trying to be impossible, or are you just always this way?

At what point would you see all that water coming down the hill days ago and say, "sure seems safe to stay here?" Do you not have any common sense? These people should have either, A, left days ago, or B, Built an ark to enjoy the ride.
